Barcelona’s final preseason game for 2024 ended in disappointment as they lost 3-0 to AS Monaco in the Joan Gamper Trophy at the Montjuïc Olympic Stadium. It was a tough night for Barcelona, who struggled throughout the match and were not at their best as they prepared for their upcoming La Liga opener against Valencia.
First Half:
Barcelona almost had a perfect start when Raphinha’s cross found Pau Víctor at the far post just a minute into the game. Unfortunately, Víctor missed the target, and this turned out to be Barcelona’s best chance in the first half. While the team played well in midfield with some good passing and pressing, they couldn’t create any real scoring opportunities.
The two young midfielders, Marc Bernal and Marc Casadó, played well, with Bernal connecting passes nicely and Casadó moving around the pitch to keep the attacks going. The defense played a high line, which was risky but mostly effective in avoiding trouble. The closest Barcelona came to scoring was when Raphinha found the net, but the goal was correctly ruled out for offside. The first half ended with no goals, but there were positive signs for Barcelona despite the lack of clear chances.
Second Half:
The second half started poorly for Barcelona, as a mistake during a routine goal-kick led to Monaco’s first goal. Iñigo Martínez passed the ball to Marc Bernal, who wasn’t paying attention, and Monaco’s Lamine Camara took advantage, scoring to give his team the lead. Just five minutes later, Monaco doubled their advantage when Takumi Minamino beat Barcelona’s offside trap and set up Breel Embolo, who lobbed the ball over Marc-André ter Stegen to make it 2-0.
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick made several changes, including bringing on the young talent Lamine Yamal, who immediately made an impact. Yamal almost helped Barcelona score with a beautiful pass to Pau Víctor, but Víctor’s attempt to lob the keeper just missed. Despite Yamal’s energy and creativity, Barcelona struggled to break down Monaco’s defense.
As the match reached the final 15 minutes, Barcelona showed some improvement in their attacking play, but it was too late. Monaco sealed their victory with a third goal five minutes from time, when Christian Mawissa found the bottom corner with a left-footed shot.
The final whistle confirmed Barcelona’s 3-0 defeat, ending their preseason on a low note. Although the preseason as a whole was positive, this match highlighted areas where Barcelona still need to improve before the new season under Hansi Flick begins.
