Brilliant race from Hudson-Smith, running a 43.44 – a personal best and new European record – that sees him leading with less than 50m to go.
But sadly he is just pipped to gold by the surging Quincy Hall down the back straight, the US athlete running a 43.40, also a personal best.
It’s silver for Hudson-Smith, a great result… though you can tell he’s a little frustrated to just miss out on that gold.

Quincy has been running fast times all season, and he always finishes like that. You need to do your research and go watch some of his other races. For real track fans who follow the sport every year and every season (NOT JUST DURING THE OLYMPICS), this is NOT a surprise. Quincy always has a crazy good (a bit unorthodox) but a very strong final 100m in his 400m runs.

150m in, Quincy was struggling, fading backwards, and looked absolutely cooked as Matt pulled away from the field and looked like he would win it by 10m. Then Quincy seemed to grit his teeth, run through the pain, and everyone in front of him started to fade, including Matt.
This race had more plot twists than an M. Night Shyamalan film. WHAT A RACE!!!
