When Manuel Akanji stepped up to take a penalty, chances of scoring were very high. He’s very experienced and plays for the best team in the Premier League. But Jordan Pickford saved the shot, and that single save in the penalty shootout was enough to beat a very good Switzerland team, and send England to the Euro 2024 semis. But for a goalkeeper who was given a water bottle telling him where Akanji would shoot, the Pickford save seems to have come from a hard working coaching staff, and NOT through the talents of the Everton goalie.
But that wasn’t the first time Pickford got lucky. He skipped a clear red card, and Liverpool weren’t given the penalty they deserved, when Pickford made an awful tackle on Van Dijk. In only matchweek 5, the ridiculously tough challenge, not only damaged Virgil’s knee and ended his season, but Liverpool would suffer so bad, they would have to get some youngsters from the Academy to replace the guy, who had been carrying Liverpool’s defense, and maybe the entire team.
In the Merseyside derbies, Pickford and Everton, aren’t just about incredibly tough challenges, but Pickford once turned the game into a circus. To waste time and kill the derby’s momentum in everyway possible, he caught a cross, and with no pressure from any Liverpool player, the goalkeeper unnecessarily falls to the ground, and fires a smile and a wink towards the Anfield crowd. In the end, though, it was Liverpool with the last laugh. First, with a 2-0 victory. And second, when Alisson Becker mocked Pickford by catching a ball, and for no reason at all, falls to the ground, just like Pickford did.
So Jordan Pickford will annoy the heck out of his opponents. And although he never gets the last laugh, he just won’t stop with the attitude. He once focused more on provoking Kai Havertz, than he did on making saves, and that’s why, as childish as it might’ve seemed, but Havertz scoring and then teasing Jordan Pickford may have been fair game. Especially when Pickford was the one who started it.
Jordan Pickford started another fight with the whole Newcastle United team. Every time Everton scored, Pickford took the provoking to a higher level. He celebrated an Everton goal with a knee slide right in front of the Newcastle supporters. And took it up a notch with an incredibly rude gesture when Everton scored another goal. Funny how Pickford was so pumped up that night just because the victory lifted Everton out of the relegation zone. So, imagine what this guy would do if he were to ever win a single title in his senior career.
So for a goalkeeper playing for a team that has had to fight relegation time and again, it’s ironic how Jordan Pickford has become England’s most-capped goalkeeper. But because international goalkeepers aren’t just playing for the top teams but for the majority of the Premier League clubs, Jordan Pickford, and although he’s made some decent saves in his career, he was compelled as England goalie.
Gigi Donnarumma was cool as ice when he and Pickford stood face to face in the penalty shootout of the Euro 2020 final. His coolness made him European Champion, Euro 2020 Player of the Tournament and one of the best goalkeepers in the world. So if Jordan Pickford wants to establish himself as a world class goalkeeper, he should quit the childish behavior and focus only on improving his goalkeeping skills.
