Christian Mbilli, a 2016 Olympian, is 27-0 with 23 KOs and recently signed a deal with Top Rank. On Aug. 17 in Quebec City, Que., Mbilli will face veteran Sergiy Derevyanchenko on ESPN.
The 29-year-old Mbilli discusses the challenges Derevyanchenko presents and what he hopes to accomplish after the bout.
He’s got his eye on a bout with super middleweight Canelo Alvarez, and discussed at some length his opinion of getting passed over by Alvarez. He noted that not only did Alvarez choose Edgar Berlanga on Sept. 14 instead of him, but that it happened earlier in the year when Alvarez fought Jaime Munguia.
Mbilli had a sensible attitude and said, “Boxing is still a business and in business, you do the best for your pocket.”
He is trained in Montreal by Marc Ramsey, and discusses how effective Ramsey is and why he hasn’t gotten widespread recognition for his skills outside of Canada.
