Liverpool’s Next Step In The Marc Guehi Transfer Is Clear, With The Major Question Already Settled

Liverpool continue to show interest in signing Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace. The 24-year-old defender has caught attention following his strong performance for England at Euro 2024. Newcastle is also pursuing Guehi, with Palace reportedly demanding around £75 million for his transfer. If this amount is paid, Guehi would become one of the most expensive defenders ever, with Harry Maguire holding the record after Manchester United bought him from Leicester for £80 million.
Whether Guehi is worth that price remains to be seen, but at just 24, he has the potential to improve further and potentially become one of the Premier League’s top defenders. Guehi has already made 98 top-flight appearances and is a regular with the England national team.
Concerns about how Guehi would perform for England at the Euros were alleviated when he excelled alongside John Stones, with Harry Maguire sidelined. Guehi’s impressive display in Germany proved his capabilities on the international stage.
Guehi is expected to resume training next week after a break, and Liverpool should make every effort to persuade him to join them at Anfield. With the Reds yet to make any signings this summer and the recent departure of Joel Matip, adding another centre-back would strengthen their squad.
Virgil van Dijk, Jarell Quansah, and Ibrahima Konate are likely to be Liverpool’s first-choice central defenders this season, while Sepp van den Berg and Nat Phillips have featured in pre-season. However, the team could benefit from an additional top-quality defender.
Guehi could seamlessly partner with any of the existing central defenders. He is a strong and fast centre-back with excellent physical attributes, and his technical skills, including improved passing, make him a valuable asset for Arne Slot.
Additionally, Liverpool might see Joe Gomez leave as part of a potential three-player deal. Although a move to Newcastle did not materialize in June, Liverpool is still open to offers for Gomez, and Newcastle could revisit their interest. Other Premier League clubs are also monitoring Gomez’s situation as he prepares to discuss his future. Gomez could potentially be involved in a high-profile transfer that includes Anthony Gordon, who has been linked with a £75 million move to Liverpool after a standout season.
