In a Copa del Rey Final against rivals Barcelona, Gareth Bale ran so fast, he not only outsprinted a 23-year-old defender from the halfway line, but to get to the Barcelona box, he actually ran off the field at one point, until finally scoring the winning goal in the 85th minute of the game. A truly iconic goal that handed Real Madrid the Copa del Rey trophy, and stands to be one of the best goals of Gareth Bale’s career.
Scoring a great goal in the Copa del Rey Final against Spanish rivals Barcelona in April, and then against city rivals Atlético Madrid in the UEFA Champions League Final in May, couldn’t have come at a better time for Gareth Bale. In only his first year in Spain, the constant injuries made him miss plenty of Real Madrid’s season, and shortly after his arrival to Madrid, both the club and fans had already started to get frustrated with the Welshman.
When Gareth Bale was NOT INJURED, he played amazing football. He scored goals, gave assists, and was always a big threat to the opponents. Bale, Benzema and Cristiano, formed the BBC, and the Real Madrid attacking trio was so lethal, they dominated Europe with four Champions League titles in five years. How did they do it? Bale, with his explosive speed, was the rocket. Benzema created spaces. And Cristiano became an incredible goal scoring machine.
Gareth Bale was so good, he scored a sensational goal against Liverpool to help Real Madrid win – yet another Champions League title. But then why were the fans … and media, always on his case?! Some say it’s because he didn’t speak Spanish after nine years in Spain. Unlikely so, because David Beckham left Real Madrid without having ever spoken a word of Spanish, and with only two single titles to show for his time in Spain. Bale, and despite the non-stop criticism, left Real Madrid having won 15 trophies.
Or was Gareth Bale hated in Madrid because he was seen as selfish?! The fans loudly booed him when took a shot, instead of passing the ball to Ronaldo. But for a game that ended in a 3-0 Real Madrid win, where was the harm in going for a goal himself and not giving an assist to Cristiano, who was already on the scoresheet of almost every single Real Madrid game.
Unfortunately for Bale, though, shooting instead of passing, may have actually been a crime on his part. Because at a time when the BBC (Bale, Benzema and Cristiano), were not so close, their fierce rivals, the MSN (Messi, Suarez and Neymar) were as tight as it gets. They were so tight that Messi skipped the chance to reach a milestone by scoring his 300th La Liga goal, and instead gave the pass from the penalty spot to his friend Luis Suarez. The assist helped him score a very easy goal, and helped him eventually beat Cristiano Ronaldo to win the European Golden Shoe.
So was Gareth Bale a scapegoat at Real Madrid? He was extremely talented, yet criticized all the time. He scored terrific goals, but was a bench warmer with both Carlo Ancelotti and Zinedine Zidane. Even at his spare time, the fans and media wouldn’t let him play his golf in peace. It seems they pushed him so bad, that he became explosive with the Wales National team. He not only led his country to the 2016 Euros semifinal, losing to his Real Madrid teammate Ronaldo and eventual champions Portugal. But he also helped Wales qualify to the World Cup for the first time in decades.
So no matter how bad Gareth Bale was treated, he remained resilient and happy. He stood firm against the attacks by holding a big sign showing Real Madrid their order in his list of priorities. Despite the constant injuries, the criticism and his short career, Gareth Bale remains to be one of the best players of his generation. Too bad the BBC, ended with a Ballon D’Or for Benzema and Cristiano, but never for Bale.
