A couple of months ago weren’t people saying that “football fell off” if Vinicius Junior or Jude Bellingham wins the Ballon Dor this year since they weren’t getting enough goals and assists. The same people who said that are the same people who have an issue with Rodri being the frontrunner for the Ballon Dor due to the fact that Spain won the EUROs and he was the best player of the tournament.
Whether he wins it or not, Rodri has a good case for the Ballon Dor this year. He was a better player in the 2023-24 season for club and country than he was in the 2022-23 season despite winning less trophies as during this period he’s had more trophies won and individual accolades than games lost which is absolutely staggering. He was a consistent performer for them during their treble winning season where he won champions league player of the season following his game winning goal in the final. Last season, he was one of the best players in the world as for a CDM, he put up impressive numbers as he had 9 goals and 14 assists 23 G/A in all competitions and while there were games where he had some shaky moments looked a little sloppy, for the most part he was excellent at the heart of their midfield. For the people who don’t watch Manchester City on a weekly basis and think that Pep Guardiola has a team of superstars who should be winning every trophy in every competition they play in, last season they could’ve gone trophy less since they were knocked out of the champions league and lost the FA Cup final to Manchester United and at times they didn’t look as dominant as they were in previous seasons and without Rodri’s brilliance, they wouldn’t have won the premier league and that’s because most of the games that they lost, he didn’t play and was undefeated in the premier league when he was on the pitch. We all saw how they were a different team every time he didn’t play and while there’s an argument to be made that he wasn’t even their best player, his influence on their team is something that has to be taken into consideration. Before the FA Cup final, he went 74 games without losing as he went a full year without a single loss (lost to Real Madrid and Arsenal, it doesn’t count since it was tied 1-1 before penalties). On top of his excellent season at Manchester City, he won the EUROs with Spain as the best player of the tournament and again, it’s debatable as to whether or not he was even the best player on his country let alone the entire tournament, he still put up some amazing performances against the likes of France and Germany even though in the final against England he was subbed off due to injury.
As we’ve seen in recent years whether people like it or not, these international competitions play a massive role in the race for the Ballon Dor because as good of a season a player can have at club level, it’s the minds of the voters when they don’t deliver internationally as while Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham had stellar seasons for Real Madrid during their champions league winning run, their lack of success in international football can slightly hurt their chances. England got to the final of the EUROs and Bellingham had his moments of brilliance, but he was inconsistent and had 3-4 poor performances while Vini didn’t have a good Copa America with Brazil and they got eliminated and in modern football, recency bias is real because what he did in the champions league could be forgotten about since he didn’t perform with his national team and people put too much emphasis on recent events. Keep in mind that he has better stats and more trophies won than Luka Modric when he won the Ballon Dor in 2018 the difference is that Rodri won the final at the EUROs and Modric as great as it is that he got to the final of the World Cup, he still didn’t win it. I’m not trying to say that he’s better, but how does he not deserve the Ballon Dor.
