Why England Just Lost The Euro 2024 Final

After a rollercoaster campaign that saw England defy the critics to reach the final, Euro 2024 ended in predictable heartbreak as Spain ran out 2-1 winners.

Goals from Nico Williams, Cole Palmer, and Mikel Oyarzabal made for a tense but enthralling contrast but, in the end, it was one comeback too many for Gareth Southgate’s side. Adam Clery picks his heart up off the floor to examine exactly what went wrong for England in the 90 minutes… and the Euros as a whole.

  1. Maybe we could get this Christian Eriksen lookalike to be assistant to the new England manager. All he needs is a subbuteo set to explain the fucking obvious to Gareth

  2. I totally agree with your analysis. Managers need to make the tough decisions and not just include a player to start every time just because of who they are like HK. Too many balls become 50/50s when kicked big and long meaning you’ve now lost possession. That needs to be drilled into them during training and match analysis sessions. And finally, the reality of tournament football is it is very tough, very little room for error, fine margins and so on. I think England should be very proud and thrilled to have made it to the final and to be beaten by Spain by just one goal is by no means anything to be ashamed of or to be upset by. I’m sure they will get another chance next time.

  3. The Netherlands would have made a real match of it. They played below par in the semi final for some reason and it cost them dearly. Spain are technically years ahead of England.

  4. Naaah Walker didn't have to cover Almo's run like he did and wouldn't have, if he still trusted his pace. He would have known Williams was there. Guehi could have attacked Yamal better, that is what makes him not elite. Mainoo could have read the moment better by covering Almo's lingering but he is young. GK maybe could shoulder some of the blame, an elite GK makes game winning saves but still I don't think he has much blame. Ridiculous to think each an every player should shuffle a long, thereby creating shade on Saka. In that moment without overloads, the back 4 should have been able to handle it.

Walker is fully to blame. Doesn't read the game. Awful positioning and didn't have that pace to bail him out.

  5. 2nd goal, again blaming Saka is ridiculous. If Saka is deep, he isn't an attacking threat. You need him in those spaces. Saka does that time after time for AFC and so does the likes of Salah. Top players do that.

It wasn't a transitional moment, why would Saka react like if he doesn't bust a leg, it's a goal? Naaah! this again is all on Walker, one of the worst players the whole tournament. His pace has gone. It was known that TAA was faster, why did Walker get ANY play time when his split times were so bad???

He knew his pace wouldn't bail him out, that is why he lingered and why he didn't get across in time. When are people going to clock on???

  6. There was no chemistry between the players in the English team. This can be seen in the relationship between white players and black players. After Palmer scored a goal, it took a million light years for the other players to run up to him and congratulate him.

  7. That 1st touch pass from carvajal to yamal is a game changer. so its yamal's turn changeing a pass into an attacking run Had Carvajal controlled it, bellingham and shaw would have pressed. Had yamal controlled it, the defenders would also have pressed him. Spanish defenders has a 1st touch & pass like midfielders and spanish attackers have the awareness of central midfielders. that is the difference. Their whole team are midfielders who have to attack or defend. its incredible.

  8. Don't think you are hard enough on England here, this is basic tactical stuff, we should be the ones leading on making it difficult for our opposition, not just reacting better. The mentality needs to change. England should be aiming to win every major tournament with the players they have. Anything else is failure. Call a duck a duck. The guys above Southgate should aim higher. Same with the country on the whole.

  9. England has too many armchair coaches whom talk too much and nonsense. Their weak-willed players are overrated. England won 1996 World Cup with helps of FIFA referees. That's why England'll never won another Wolrd Cup on foreign soil.

  10. Matches arent decided by tactics but the quality of the players. Footy is a very simple game and so many try to complicate it. The best tactical advice was given by Matt Busby "go out and play, lads". I will admit that young players' heads have been filled with so much nonsense that they may lack commonsense.

  11. England lost because they were robbed, not directly but indirectly. Spain shouldn't even have been in the final in the first place, they rigged the game V Germany. England should've faced a different opponent in the final to win.

  12. “Why England lost..” cause England is bad at everything. From football to Rugby, from history to culture, from food to arts, from music to fashion, etc.
    But especially attitude.
