Gregg Berhalter was fired as the USMNT Head Coach, prompting initial reactions about whether this was the right decision for the team. The impact on World Cup 2026 is a major concern, along with questions about why U.S. Soccer waited 11 days to make this decision. Discussions are now focused on the next steps for USMNT, the current state of U.S. soccer, and what the future holds. Additionally, there is speculation about who will replace Berhalter and how much players’ emotions should influence the hiring of the next Head Coach.

As an American “soccer” fan, the two American’s take is embarrassing.
The money constraint argument is always interesting to me. There is likely no shortage of American soccer benefactors willing to bankroll a top-tier USMNT coach for the 2026 World Cup in the USA. If money is used as an excuse, it is because the US Soccer Federation has failed to be creative.
Inherently nepotistic and incestuous ussoccer federation always sets an apologist tone to these things. He was by all ostensible metric mediocre to bad! An international coach with High Level Torunament experience and a track record of dealing with young developing players is necessary
You can't be motivated and need to be pushed wtf Charlie
When did CBS start to hired Capable people?
The mls shills need to go away!!!!
Yeah but pyloric is one of the few focused on????
The truth may hurt, but it’s still the truth.

How Local US Coaches will look at the opportunity to coach the USMNT should be exactly the same way as a foreign coach.
It's a great opportunity to coach a Host Nation of the World Cup with a very very very large Fan base.
It's all Positive for a qualified coach.
Of course there are agents who know how to create value for their clients even if they have never coached even a kids team.
So, coaching the USMNT is a create opportunity, that not a question.
The question is DO YOU Have as a Candidate Coach the Experience and other qualifications that the USSF will require?
You can read 100 CV's and hire a Coach within 3 weeks or a month
The reason why Berhalter or another Coach, had to go even if the reason for not performing well is the players… IS THAT IT'S THE COACH'S JOB TO MOTIVATE THE PLAYERS OR REPLACE THEM.
Your Driving the Car the Taxi or the Bus, I'm paying the Fare, it's your Job to get me to where I'm going as the USSF or as the FANs etc… The Coach's Job is to make those decisions and sometimes on the fly.
If Tim Weah gets red carded and yo have to finish the match with 10 players (See semifinal game between Columbia and Uguruay) it is your Job Gregg Berhalter to make the decision which will get us the win against Panama, as did Columbia against Uruguay.
it's that SiMPLE
Respecting the Coach is RULE number 1, to be part of the USMNT.
If a player doesn't respect the US Coach, then he doesn't belong in there.
Liking a coach or not liking him, it's like Charlie and Tony said, it means nothing.
In this story about Berhalter, I noticed that the USMNT players focused too much on telling the Media that they like Gregg, which is something insignificant in the overall picture as far as success is concerned, but why did a failed team forced on saying we like the manager?
I think it's the problem of being too comfortable, which his a sign that a manager or coach is not doing his job. That's why we lost against Panama and Uruguay in the Copa America..
Maybe it's the same reason why we lost 5-1 in the friendly against Columbia
So, if you pay attention to details early enough you can avoid catastrophes by firing the individual who no longer fits in the operation.
When you fail in a tournament as big as Copa America and on your homefield, you should Fire the Coach PERIOD. Success or Failure begin with the work that the Coach does
Every player ends up respecting (liking) a winning coach, because every player likes winning.
Likewise every player ends up hating a losing coach, because they all hate losing.
Players who don't hate losing, will never help you win.
FANS like winning too.
So where does losing and liking a coach becomes a good value that the FANS like?
Sometimes players who learn to manipulate their coach by telling him they like him, it's because he doesn't require too much work from them.
In the FIFA rule book, there is no text in there about getting Points or Trophies for liking your coach. You either are a good player which must show up in the results, or you're not.
When you focus more on the results in the analysis, you find lots of the answers you need to hear.
Excuses excuses excuses thats all I heard – i for one actually want to hear what Nigel says so can the shills stop over reacting and talking over him. The truth is a bitter pill but you need to digest it to improve – fact is they're not as goodnas they think they are, they dont understand the sport or have football IQ, they're very entitled and arrogant and there's a lot of matches that are a perfect example of this cuz they dont bother preparing for opponents at all and just plainly they think they're it so they dont do their homework, they dont have proper pitches or stadiums for the games, they dont even call the sport by its proper name, most importantly the sport is not accessible for all kids, the sport is treat like polo there, only middle class can play it cuz it cost to play there, no wonder none of these players have any grit and then they grow up and go to Europe and cant cut it. They all say the current squad plays in top teams but they rarely mention most of them are benchwarmers not starts, sure youre players maybe talented enough to get to European club BUT they dont have enough qualitynto be starters and that a problem, at the end of the day they cant cut it, stop over rating the players etc.. it needs a complete restructure if they truly want to be a football nation but its doubtful seeing as all these owners and federation want is to make money, they dont actually want the sport to grow too much because then they cant price gauge supprters. The usa isnt a football nation and doesnt have a football culture either, its not the primary sport and thats okay but at the same time at least have a realistic take on the state of the sport, maybe one day it will get bigger and they could get better but it will take time and the right people have to be in place to steward that agenda.
I’ve listened to a lot of CIWYW with Tony and Charlie and they’ve been massively critical of Berhalter for years now.
I don’t think they feel hurt that he was fired, but the missed opportunity and the disappointment at lack of progress.
Tony and Charlie may have overreacted a little but I think he just didn’t quite articulate his thoughts adequately.
Charlie is delusional lol they didn't play well in the world cup. He's Soo obsessed with the WC 2022 like this team did something the other Usmnt never did
Go on Nigel. Get em told. Idiots
This team is so bad, these guys need to face reality. The Brit is 100% correct.
Watch Tony Meola’s Kickin It interview and see how much he cares about the success of soccer in the US if you’re wondering why he reacted the way he did.
Also it’s just a great great interview
Good god these two americans 😔 i hope nigel is well and sound talking to these emotional folks 😅
They were going to hire Marsch but a small group of the "star" players begged Matt Crocker to keep Gregg… Spoiled weak kids.
Finally an intelligent well thought out statement by CHARLIE
ty
Well said BRIT.
Cmon guys the Brit is being objective
We are subjective
I consider myself a typical American soccer fan who likes football and baseball much more – I will cheer for us but if we lose won’t shed a tear.
That’s not the attitude the rest of the world has. If they lose, immediate firing, people crying, etc.
I think that’s what the British dude is saying. In order to win on a world stage where this is the only thing people care about, you have to care THAT much.
Ay yo CBS please fire these so called pundits acting like actual babies. Gregg was a terrible coach and i agree with the englishman it is a celebration stop acting as if the decline of USMNT has begun.
Nigel and Tony are actually on the same page but don’t realize it. Nigel is saying to get on with it, while Tony is concerned about how it affects the future of the game in the U.S. What Tony doesn’t realize is that by getting on with it and treating the game like the rest of the world does, it will actually make us better and eventually grow the sport as a byproduct of just getting the job done. The pressure Tony and Charlie are talking about is because of the 2026 World Cup. The reality is that we need to lower our expectations for the group because USSF is a wreck and the players we got are the players we got. Get the best coach to bring out the best for whatever players we have, keep the vision short term, then start thinking about the long run.
British gonna British 😂
Wow… seriously… I’m done with this nepotism bs.. these guys are USSF personified… lack of self acknowledgment of who and where we are.. we get it, you’re friends with Gregg.. be honest with urself and stop the pity party for Gregg who failed.. for 5 bloody years
Who is the guy wearing the grey tight shirt? I don’t think this job is for him. And Charley laughing is a sign of nervousness when you hear someone speaks the truth.
The praise for Berhalter’s first cycle is laughable. First, he refused to bring in the most talented rosters, then as the US limped thru qualifying and qualifying was being threatened by poor performances he finally started replacing the MLS lifers with better talent. And with that better talent still struggled. Soccer is more than “results”. You get consistent results when you play creative dangerous soccer and create consistent goal scoring chances. As for the WC group, they scored 2 goals in group play. Two. They scored early against Iran, then Berhalter curiously parked the bus and invited Iran to attack for 75% of the game and nearly gave up the tying goal.
It’s quite obvious the federation is trotting this BS out to defend the indefensible hire of Berhalter to begin with. It’s propaganda damage control.
Don't ask for someone's opinion and then get your panties in a bunch for it. I agree with the brit 100%, coaches get sacked all the time world wide, it's part of the job, only in America do they make those things the biggest headline in the world.
these dudes getting heated over a mediocre manager finally getting dropped. the English dude is spot on. he speaks the truth
It means good Gregg is fired from USMNT it means he does not have desire to win the team every tournament in International match as World Cup and Copa America. It is sad very low supporters of soccer also people in America does not care when Gregg got fired it is because terrible job also failed managed their players in World Cup Round 16 and Copa America. I'm glad USA team is not fit in soccer to World Cup and Copa America.
Usmnt are an average team, they have one decent to good player in Pulisic but Reyna, Dest, Weah need to swallow their egos and go somewhere where they can play more games, Their obsession with playing out from the back is silly, the game is about scoring goals so mixing it up with some direct vertical stuff. Also they haven't got a ball playing keeper and centre backs who are comfortable on the ball. They are not the 11th best team in the world. Any other host of a major tournament would appreciate not needing to qualify. How many us players get into the so called 14th rated team Uruguay.
Charlie says the next US manager will inherit a team that is 'motivated' but 'needs pushing?' These pundits are stealing a living.
