Born in Utrecht, the Netherlands, on the 17th June 2001, Jurriën David Norman Timber is a full Dutch international who plays for Ajax. Timber began his footballing career in Utrecht before being snapped up by Feyenoord in 2008, ultimately moving to Ajax in 2014. Being given his senior debut by Erik Ten Hag in 2020, Timber has gone on to make 74 appearances for the club, been directly involved in 6 goals and has won 6 caps for the Dutch national team. He also succeeded Ryan Gravenberch in winning the Marco van Basten Award for the best Ajax Talent of the Year for 2022 but where does he play?

Jurrien Timber is a defender that’s mainly featured as a centre back, although at times he’s been deployed as a full back and even in defensive midfield. He’s played his best football for Ajax as a centre back, but due to Ten Hag’s fluid system, Timber has experience playing in a lot of positions all across the backline when his side have possession. Meanwhile, without the ball, the aggressive nature of Ten Hag’s press means that he happily follows opposition players into positions that centre backs tend to find uncomfortable such as into central midfield, or into the wide areas near the touchline. Timber is happy in these situations thanks to his impressive skill set: A highly mobile player, Timber has good recovery pace and is fairly strong for his size. He’s also a good 1 v 1 defender that reads the game well. Offensively, Timber is a very capable and composed passer that has the technical skill to carry the ball.
Playing for an Ajax side that have averaged more than 63% possession during his two seasons in the squad, Timber spends more time attacking than he does defending. Extremely composed with the ball at his feet, Timber can appear to dwell on the ball but he does this to attract pressure – creating space and passing lanes for his teammates. What’s more is that if he lets a presser get too close, he can escape danger with a dribble by throwing a body feint and carrying into space. He’s also a very progressive passer and is capable of finding advanced teammates in space with accurate passes.
Defensively he reads the game well and has good positioning. He combines this understanding of the game with an aggressive defending style to step in and regain possession for his side, often tackling the intended target before they can properly control or simply stepping in and making a clean interception. But where Timber really shines is when defending against the transition, especially in the final third. His reading of the game, speed and aggression sees him identify the outball before quickly closing the distance and putting in a challenge. Alternatively, if a player is dribbling out, Timber will drop off and either: wait for a poor touch so he can step in and tackle or he can cover the space in behind with his speed, either dropping off and making interceptions and ball recoveries or simply matching the ball carrier for pace.

So what does the future look like for the Dutch international? After a season and a half of professional football, Timber has already established himself as a key player for Ajax and at just 20 years old has attracted a lot of interest. He could play at all of the top European clubs, with Xavi’s Barcelona an interesting proposition but the most likely destination is following Erik ten Hag to Manchester United. At 20 years old Timber is not the finished article but he’s already an incredibly talented ball playing defender who would be a fine addition to most sides in Europe.
But what do you think? Where do you think Timber will be playing next season? And do you think he’d be a good signing for Ten Hag’s Manchester United? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

The amount of comments from people who have apparently never seen him play is hilarious. Just to be clear: he is def NOT better at RB and he ALWAYS plays in a 433 (not 532). I can't handle all the bs comments lol
Timber would be a massive addition to our team for sure as he can play in multiple positions …. I would like us to secure the signature of sven botman as well … the only thing is that the manager might look bias as dejong /timber/VDB/Botman is all dutch nationals …
Good work mate
RB is the perfect position for him right now cause he would need time to develop physical before operating at CB for United
0:40 small mistake. He was a starter that game, not a 2nd half substitute
Timber will be playing for Ajax next season.
He always stays on his feet, never losing control of situations
Thank you for covering Timber, indeed only fans of Eredivisie or a few football fans outside of Eredivisie will know of Timber, i have been watching Timber since he was playing at Jong since 2018, i am glad that he's made himself a name, also he is one of the reason we are so solud at the back, if Ten Hag did bring him to United, it's gonna be a good bargain ( suck for us for sure, but we as Ajax fans are already used of losing our stars.. )
varane and timber that is football heritage
Would be interesting to get him and maybe mould him into a proper DM player rather than full CB. That extra layer of defence cant be ignored, its like wearing two condoms
Two quality CB behind him would be great, he clearly has great reading of the game – in the past I wanted Utd to invest in Tonali or Camavinga…. I think this would be an even better investment
anyones better than lump head harry
If you want to compare him with someone I would say Mascherano. A small, aggressive CB that has the ball playing abilities of a midfielder. Very useful when you’re playing with a high line and high pressing, but vulnerable when the team’s pushed back into their own box.
Any other United fan picturing ETH's horror afta watching the team on Sunday 😂?? He'll probably be thinking he needs an entirely new squad
Buy Timber and turn him into a CDM. The way he senses danger, stamina, and versatile could be our Kante
Cr7
Sancho VDB Raphinha
Orel Mangala/Timber Lovro Majer/Teun Koopmeiners
Shaw Gvardiol Varane Lirola/ Matty Cash
De Gea
Hey Dave! What do you think about Manu Koné and Edmond Tapsoba as possible targets for United? I haven't seen any links to them, but I feel like they would be perfect Ten Hag players, wouldn;t be absurdly expensive, and could adress some of United's biggest problems (progression especially).
I want Daley Blind back. I miss looking at him.
Big flop
I believe he would be great at RB and as a CB option if needed.
he wont handle the physicality of the premier league, hear it from me
A video on how madrid can replace mbappe with maybe like an nkunku and some more options
Timber stays cool in every situation, that is his strength. I hate to see him leave Ajax…with Martinez he makes a perfect duo.
Perfect replacement of Maguire
Varrane and timber would be solid defense for United.
Height is important in premier league as a center back
Has the asme attributes as viktor lindelof
He is a very good talent that we don't need right now.
Timber is 20😲 and such a tallent. I hope wr get him.
Sven botman or Evan ndicka are much better timber is too small end of
This guy will get bullied in the prem
Surely his best destination is Nottingham Forest. 🙃
Hoping he goes to Manchester United!
We already have a wooden centre half. No more timber please
Not worth £40mil …don't get the hype
