  1. He should have quit because he failed on the pitch and but for atrocious good luck we would have been out of the tournament a lot sooner. The fans disliked him because he clung on despite not producing on the pitch, but also because he was an ultra-woke yes man. He should have gone 4 years ago.

  2. England are in better shape than they were before he took over, but he hasn't been the man to win a trophy, which they should have done at Euro 2020(1). That could have catapulted them into WC 2022 and Euro 2024 with a different mindset. Whoever takes over will be expected to deliver that elusive trophy.

  3. wheres the personal attack in the following from Gary Lineker????????
“You can think of all sorts of words and expletives if you like, but it was sh!t.

"Was it tactically inept? They’re just a little bit lost tactically. And that comes from the manager, I’m afraid. It really does. He’s got to get England playing higher up the pitch, as a unit. Because at the moment they’re not a unit. Are they not coached to play that?"

  4. I am sick of all the negative comments. When he took over England were no where. Our Golden Generation – failed! England were rock bottom. You might not like his tactics and decisions – but he has elevated English football. He gave us back hope again and a belief in England once again. You all need to sit back and take a clear, hard look at what he has achieved. The next England manager will find it hard to even emulate his record. I wish Gareth all the very best for the future and thank him for giving us hope again.

  5. Always the manager that gets the boot 2 euro finals World Cup quarter final maybe the players are shite. Maybe England just ain’t good enough when they play in the big boys league.

  6. Prerequisite to becoming England manager: lead you team to relegation and then get sacked as a League One manager trying to get your team promoted back to EPL. Let’s make a shortlist…

  7. Everyone slagging off Southgate forgets he was England's most succesful manager. Or are too young to remember the absolute dross the FA has served up in England Managers over the past 30 years.

Southgate had 4 tournaments. 2 finals, a semi final and a quarter final. Yes we should have done better with those opportunities but don't think there's much better out there.

We still remember Allardyce! Taylor! Mclaren!

  8. Wrong outlook. He is demanding respect but mugging off players and fans. He hasn't achieved anything. He had an easy route to the 2020 euros and bottled it against the first "big nation". Fast forward two years another easy route to the first big club (france) and they bottled it. Fast forward to a few days ago they face the first big club in an extremely easy path to the final, and … bottle it 😅

True fans don't really care if England lose, so long as they did us proud and really tried their best. Passing back to pickford on a rare attacking momentum, playing injured players, and players in positions they aren't comfortable with just isn't it. Also, not utilising the squad and leaving subs till way too late when things are clearly not working for 2,3,4,5,6,7 games, etc

Even if they won the final (on penalties lets be honest), I would still want him gone. There's no doubt he is an eloquent nice chap, but you need more than that

  9. The tipping point for me was this tournament (don't get me wrong I got very frustrated with him at the last ones for making substitutions with a minute to go when there's no point making them) the fact that England are so boring to watch is really annoying. It just feels like a waste of time watching, usually for us to end up drawing or losing. Although we got very lucky all the way through this tournament, not once did I think we deserved to win and that I think will also be a big reason for lots of people. Football should be entertaining if you're going to make it boring just to scrape through and win a trophy by luck and parking the bus is not glorious or fun or anything to celebrate

  10. England ranked 23rd for attacking performance in Euros. That's football he made no effort to change and improve. Sat back in defence and hoofed the ball up pitch.

  11. wait a minute GS is not a victim, he sounded pathetic in his interview when stepping down. The best way to answer the critics is by managing a top level club and winning something. Self pity is an appalling trait.

  12. We are allowed to criticise the England manager who was getting £5million a year. Southgates tactics were a joke, and he prevented England winning a trophy.

  13. It seems to me that Lineker, Shearer and Keene are all looking at the money. I do not understand what is wrong with a Mangaer who takes the team to the finals and then loses by just one goal.

  14. If Gareth Southgate folded because pundits criticised the poor performances of his team and because he felt that being booed after the Summer 2022 Nations League fixtures was unfair, then I'm glad he's gone. Completely deluded individual who lacks self-awareness and balls

  15. He played in four major Tournaments, he had the most luckiest routes of all time. Never played Brazil, Argentina or Portugal. Played Belgium in group stage and 3rd place playoff and lost both. Played France, Spain and Italy once in them 4 Tournaments. 2 of them in the Final and 1 in the Quarter Finals. Where he lost all 3. So the only teams of note, he beat in 4 Tournaments was Germany and Holland. He has no experience at winning big trophies as a player or manager. He won 2 League Cups as a player, never played for a big club. Only managed Middlesbrough who got relegated with him in charge. He has never played under any top managers, like Jose, Sir Alex, Wenger, Ancelotti, Pep etc. So he played negative defensive football, which was not what most of these players are use too. Stones, Walker, Trent, Bellingham, Saka, Rice, Kane etc. all play for teams that play on the front foot, who try and dominate possession and attack all the time. Teams that always look to pass forward, make quick passes and attack at will. Yet they are being told to play a complete different way. A top manager, who plays attacking football, would of won a Tournament with England out of the last 4. There is a reason why, since the Premier League began, we have never had an English manager win it. This is the most easiest time, to win a big international tournament. It’s not like decades before, where Brazil, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Argentina, Portugal etc, had tons of Worldclass players in every position. England had the best group of players, yet the manager set them up wrong, played negative football and didn’t drop poor players, who were not performing. He also needed game changers from out wide, he felt Grealish, Sterling or Rashford were not the answer. He decided Trent was not worth playing, with his set pieces, passing accuracy etc. It worked with him in centre midfield with Liverpool. Bellingham was on fire with Madrid. Foden was unplayable with City last season. Palmer was the man in form, who showed he was capable when he came on, yet Southgate never started him. He had Toney and Watkins, yet started Kane every game. This is down to the manager, people called it before the Tournament. Nobody cares about runner up, only winning is success.

  16. I am a neutral and I am ready surprised at the level of criticism being hurled at Southgate. Whatever his tactics were his resume as English manager is only bettered by Sir Alf Ramsey. That is pretty impressive. Also his comportment is such that I think he has being a fantastic ambassador for the English people. He is articulate, polite and intelligent. In my opinion a very good role model for English youngsters all over the world.

  17. Gary Lineker described, in a throw away comment (in a 30m+ podcast which was generally nuanced, supportive and hopeful), an England PERFORMANCE as s*** , a word choice he probably regrets now, but the sentiment of which was universally agreed with – objectively England did not play well in that match. I never saw/heard Gary, Alan or Micah being personally abusive about Gareth (or any of the players) so l'm not sure where the narrative that they were comes from??? I hope (although l suspect he won't) that Gareth gets the chance to see behind the one word headline that was thrown at him (& Harry) without any of the surrounding context so that he realises the truth of the matter!

  18. As an England fan , I appreciate everything that Southgate has done for England, but maybe he lacks that football experience of managing at the highest level at a top club .

Hopefully, the F.A will pick the best candidate and finally bring football home.
