Spain were the best team throughout the tournament. England were very lucky to progress through to the final. Southgate should not have started Kane. Southgate made a massive mistake. He should have changed up the team for the final. I would have started the following players last night: Pickford, Guehi, Stones, Shaw, Walker – Mainoo, Wharton – Palmer, Gordon – Eze – Watkins

Southgate can be an easy scrap goat. Potter may not be an upgraded replacement, as he hasn't won anything and he failed to manage Chelsea.
The ultimate reason is that the English system does not produce enough talent. Look at the Big 4, most players are from overseas. The dominations of Big 4 in Europe give an illusion that English football is above Euro countries.

People were asking for Southgate to be knighted because he made one good sub in the previous game, pathetic

Why did Southgate go back to a 4? Quite obviously he did it to deal with those wingers that had terrorised defenses all competition. As for underperforming attackers, these England players have done it every competition they appear in over the years and Southgate is not to blame, because our defenders have improved and performed. Our attackers producing good performances in flashes shows they can do it in that system, but they need to do it with consistency. When people talk about attackers not being able to perform or perform with consistency because of Southgate or his system, I have only one answer to give them and their argument is blown out if the water. Raheem Sterling. Did he not perform in this system consistently at the 2022 Euros, why can't they? Maybe they are not as good as we say they are because what makes a great player is not just his individual qualities, but his ability to incorporate those qualities into the managers system and tactics and expand on those ideas of the manager on the pitch to levels even the manager could not have imagined. That is what great players do. England had a better and more balanced team at the last 2022 Euros beating convincingly tougher teams than this team faced and struggled with in this Euro and producing a better defensive record, this is just common sense. The question of whether Southgate should stay or go really depends on the availability of a better replacement, because he has produced better results than past managers, including those with an amazing team of players to choose from in the past as we see here. As for the madness from the media that Palmer should have started, Southgate used Palmer effectively and by doing so protected him and the team from his vulnerabilities and defensive liabilities, much as Man City did in only using him as a sub. You could say Southgate choosing to use Palmer as a sub was genius securing the reaching of a final in a top competition, unlike Chelsea and their mid-table struggles as a result of a different approach to using him. In fact Southgate's only error was that he crumbled to the demands of pundits and the media and abandoned his policy of bringing the subs on as late as possible, by bringing them on too early in this game as the media had been demanding and criticising him for not doing. The result was that Spain had more time to play England with a weakened defense which other teams did not have the opportunity to do. Once Palmer was on the England defense was always going to be weaker with him losing the ball and giving the ball back to the opposition, which he was better at not doing in the previous game for once I must admit, but in this game he went back to, and with him being late to respond to danger, out of position defensively and having no interest in tracking back and Spain started to exploit this so had England on the ropes able to strike England at will when they wanted to. What made this defensive liability Palmer brought even more harmful to England's chances was that Saka who when fresh does not have these defensive liabilities Palmer, was tired and so was also playing with the same defensive liabilities Palmer brought on due to fatigue. Having one player that is a defensive liability on the pitch for a long period of time in Palmer is one thing, but to have two which became the case when Saka became exhausted against a team that had beaten all the best teams in the competition is another and Spain were exploiting this resulting in their goal and before their goal and would have exploited this some more if England scored or if the game went into extra time and they had to. The game was done and the best team won and Southgate made the best decisions possible to get this team as far as they could, except in bringing the subs on too early and so getting the goal back to early which gave Spain plenty of time to exploit the new balance in the England team that increased England's attacking threat, but decreased their defensive strength and the possibility of giving away more goals against a Spanish team with a strong defensive record. What England was looking for as an England goal like the one we saw, but with the defense successful in keeping Spain out and so England winning 1-0. It didn't happen because those Spain wingers were relentless as always and a constant danger throughout this game with a multitude of weapons and throughout the competition terrorising defenses in the way on Raheem Sterling once used to be the only winger able to do, but now more wingers are doing and are expected to do, from Salah to Mbappe, Junior and so on. What is unusual is that Spain has these modern types of speedy dribbling wingers (which to put it simply are clones of Sterling whose style of play was designed in the Pep factory exploiting Sterlings qualities) on both wings and that is scary, because they operate without weakening the defense, able to counter attack, stretch the width of play, go the down the wing o cut to the inside and even with their dribbling or passing slice through the middle. It is almost impossible to defend against because of their endless variety of lethal weapons as wingers and Spain has them on both wings. What makes it worse is that they are able to operate without weakening the teams defense or neglecting their defensive responsibilities, and it is why Sterling was so useful and important to Southgate's style of play in the 2022 Euros which England would have won if we had not changed our style of play we used to get to the final in that final game. There is no doubt Sterling should have been in the squad at this tournament to give England what Spain had giving them the ability to be lethal in attack without weakening their defense.
