if you don`t appreciate what tripps has offered England team for the past ten years then it is not Southgate problem , tripps has been an essential part of the team success in the past three big tournaments , a man with leadership qualities and experience , dead ball specialist and great vision of the field , he is not just a good player , he is a fantastic team player , one more thing tripps didn`t have a bad season , just a few bad moments and an injury mid season , other than that he was a key factor of Newcastle success and made over 20 assists the past two seasons , he EARNED his place as a starter in England , as for Trent even when walker and Kieran retires he won`t be a starter if he doesn`t develop field qualities other than crosses and free kicks .

A back 5 with Arnold as the RWB is literally the perfect system and position for Arnold. Accentuates his crossing ability which is probably best in the world after KDB and limits his lack of defensive prowess with the RCB covering him.

If Southgate doesn't trust Trent in as a right back in a back four and doesnt want to give him another chance in midfield, then surely a back 3 with Trent as a right wing-back is the one formation that Trent should be nailed on to start. Trippier might be an all round better right back defensively at times, but Trent has got the higher ceiling.
Southgate has reached his plateau. When he first started he was great with the players. Much more comfortable and confident than before he was at the helm but now it’s clear this should be his final tournament. But I cannot blame him for everything. But you have, you have got to be brave when it comes to tournament football. We all know being progressive and brave is not in his D.N.A.
So why not play Trent as a 7?
The difference with the Foden still being in the centre is that the width should exist from the wingbacks and they should all have more space. Not sure about Saka at left back and agree with the take on Trippier over TAA. Not sure it makes sense, I feel Gareth doesn't want to upset Trippier and also signals prioritising defense over attack.

John Stones playing square balls to Guéhi was an issue too. England seem obsessed with keeping the ball so the opposition can't hurt them, rather than trying to score. They had the 3rd most possession but half the chances of other teams.
John Stones doesn't feel comfortable passing into midfield if the midfielders have a man on them. Then it becomes slow and lethargic and they lose the England fans and atmosphere.
