He’s good but he’s not better than Neymar?
There’s something that brings out the best in Cody Gakpo when he’s playing for the Netherlands in a major tournament. Anyone who watches international football will tell you that he’s one of the best attackers in the world. He has a combined total of 6 goals in the last 2 major tournaments: World Cup and the EUROs and he is showing his worth on the biggest stage for his country. He was already seen as a sought after player during his time at PSV, he truly arrived at the 2022 World Cup where he scored 3 goals in 5 games and he was a complete forward in the way in which he played and his skillset was so well rounded. This then earned him a move to Liverpool in the January transfer window in 2023 where it’s fair to say that the results have been mixed.
Gakpo has been very inconsistent sometimes he’s in good form and other times he doesn’t do a lot and is capable of going 5 months without scoring and his stop start career at Liverpool was often a source of frustration among their fanbase and we weren’t able to see the best version of him in Jurgen Klopp’s system. He hasn’t flopped there; he just hasn’t been profiled properly and when you sign players of that caliber who have a lot of ability, you don’t want to play them out of position. It’s great that he’s a versatile player as that’s what managers value, but he doesn’t play in his proper position. At the EUROs, he has 3 goals in 4 games and he has been carrying the Netherlands so far and it’s not a coincidence that he’s producing with the national team simply because they’re using him to his strengths and are playing him as a left winger. We saw how good he was at PSV when he played on the left. The issue at Liverpool is that they already have Luis Diaz and you’re basically asking Gakpo to play as a midfielder or a center forward, if he plays as a winger, he’s able to cut inside get closer to the goal and create for others while having a fullback overlap him when he’s trying to cause havoc and assuming you go with a 2 striker formation you play him on the left with someone to play off of and linkup with him. Liverpool have a new manager for next season in Arne Slot and hopefully under his compatriot, he gets the best out of Gakpo and plays him on the left because if he’s able to play there, watch him get at least 30+ G/A.
Great video. Also wanna bring up Gakpo's resurgence of form in the last 10 premier league games this season or so. I don't think he had the greatest of seasons though I still think he is being underrated by Liverpool fans AND non Liverpool fans. Glad to see him succeeding in the euros but I'm not surprised because as you said, he's being played in his preferred position, and because he showed good form before the euros.
unsubbing cuz you're a peppsi fan
God bless you Gakpo 🙏🏼
I liked this channel but gragnesemeally924 said hes unsubbing 😢
when theres a coder then theres a gakpo
He is shit. Reijnders and Schouten are clearly better. People only look at goals and assist, that's it.
