Will this be SPAIN’s first REAL test? EURO 2024 quarterfinals preview | ESPN FC

I’m gab he’s juules uh gray skies over Berlin which is why we’re we’re indoors today here at scaling spaces your um workspace solution here in uh here in Berlin Jules we’re here we are we’re here it’s quarterfinal time last eight we’re going to do this a little bit differently this show we’re going to uh we’re going to look at uh two semi-final two quarterfinals even in the in in our A and B segments yeah so let’s start straight away with the one which I think on paper is the most box office one for sure and it’s Holland no I’m just kidding um Spain against Germany uh all right so you have the easy reading is Spain have looked really good yeah although some people feel that they haven’t necessarily been challenged and even against uh against Georgia in the last game it was a little bit hairier than it could have been should I mean they didn’t lose their cool and they came back they scored their goals but if Kat Scalia scores from inside his own half all of a sudden yeah no you’re right and I I think if you look at all their team and the strength and the flows that maybe they had is defensively especially at center backs where you think okay to many French center backs maybe although French center backs are great and handsome but especially but it’s true that L nor and laort we or sure and because they haven’t really been tested then because Italy was not good enough because it’s really embarrassing there they they had the toughest group Italy and Croatia and we can legitimately say they haven’t been tested because Italy and Croatia were that bad exactly so let’s see and this is the first big test and we’ve said have they picked too early maybe we’ve seen T teams in tournaments like that before that were so good in a group stage and then with for sure I don’t know if this Spanish team can can be one like that or not because they’ve showed a lot of great things with the ball Nico Williams and lamin yamal and pedri and rodri all of that great but it’s still not perfect up against against the M Germany side where nasman started out with a certain idea certainly changed it we saw in in the last game I don’t know if his changes have worked in the sense they’ obiously worked because they’ve won but they didn’t wipe the floor with Denmark no it got a little bit the Switzerland game in the end Switzerland’s XG was .23 so it’s not over egg Switzerland too much um but equally he had to make those changes lat on right yeah yeah so do we see this as a positive from nman like yes I have the personality and courage to drop verts to make these these tweaks or is it actually oh this isn’t working yeah I think he tried something with s that didn’t work and I would be very surprised if s starts against Spain and not vers and also if they want to win that battle in Midfield they need vers there they need his quality technically s has the pace great but you want to be able to keep the ball against the Spanish price and San doesn’t do that this is not way he does ball retention from vers is highly Superior than ball retention from Sunny so even if vers hasn’t been great since that Scotland game and and I wonder if there’s room for musala and ver to both be great in same games for obvious reasons I still think to keep the ball as much as possible you need vs in that Team all let’s talk the other semi-final Portugal and uhal the other quarterfinal even Portugal and France like come on I’m not going to repeat this endlessly and everybody loves repeating that style oh two on Golds one Penal this is all part of GTA’s master plan play rubbish football and then win it at the end because you have better players it worked for him in one World Cup should have worked for him at the other World Cup if mbappe had started playing maybe earlier than the last 10 minutes um frss are overwhelming favorites you’re you’re okay with this you’re not worried at all yeah overwhelming I’m he’s just he’s just going to send on another defensive midfielder in the next game and yeah kaminga will replace rabio with suspended and then we will have the same 433 that we saw against Belgium because he loves the defensive solidity he loves the organization and hopefully mbapp will be better and went to the tournament de B was playing but then all of a sudden like he doesn’t love this anymore yeah because he wants to find the right space for Griezmann and and doesn’t think and things that right now Griezmann did well against Belgium which I don’t think certainly in possession you can have Griezmann on the right hand side and think this is a good idea but again he shows you that his priority is defensive and this team is better is very strong defensively with Griezmann as a right winger then if you put grizzman somewhere else so we’re we’re going to come back to this um and I don’t want to call him Forest scum uh cuz somebody else is force comp in this scenario okay um but Portugal I all the focus has been on Cristiano should he play should he not play you and I disagree on that a little bit I think um so let’s save that part for the podcast bit but I’ll say this about Portugal I think the pieces are there they are creating the chances I think people I think if fr stumble they’re more likely to stumble in this game than later in the competition I don’t know if you’re on board with that yeah they’re dangerous and I think again defensively we saw against Slovenia it was far from perfect I don’t think pep can play no whole 90 minute 120 Minutes even with extra time so this would be interesting but obviously talent wise this Portugal team is amazing when you think about the players they have we’re going to get a little more granular with this on the Gavin jws podcast [Music]

Gab Marcotti and Julien Laurens discuss the tie of the round as Spain take on Germany in a huge quarterfinal clash! The pair also discuss France’s chances of overcoming a talented Portugal side.

  1. Spain will win as they always do German clubs v Spanish clubs in the champs league; no contest. Spain can go all the way. Yesterday Jules with Italy colours and now the Spanish? 😮

  2. It's definitely a much bigger challenge for Spain because they meet the host team. Plus its not just the host, but it's Germany (who are arguably the 2nd best team in the tournament after Spain). Worthy of a final

  3. The problem with any big team playing Spain is that they have a midfield with crazy ball control and distribution and crazy paced wingers who enjoy 1v1, pressing them high up the field would be a big mistake because thier midfield would pass thier way out of it leaving your defense isolated for Nico and yamal, this is why Croatia and Italy had to form a low block but now the big issue is that Spain are now deadly with crosses thanks to yamal and it gets opposition confused.

  4. People should remember that Spain has achieved a lot in the 21st century. They have won:

2 UEFA Euro Cup, 1 FIFA World Cup, 1 UEFA Nations League Cup within 16 years. These are great achievements.

  5. Spain have already tested themselves against top level opponents previously. This version of Germany haven't. It's Spain's game to lose.

  6. im trying to figure out who on germany can run with nico Williams outside of musiala? pace and defense is why im siding with spain to beat germany spain have to be favs for world cup in 2026 this team is young and talented

  7. The gaslighting against Spain is epic. They are not proven? Italy and Croatia are no walk in the park, Germany toucgest test was Switzerland

  8. Spanien is a great team but Deutschland is better on paper.

    Havertz > Morata
    Musiala > Williams
    Wirtz > Yamal ect..

Spanien has all the hype, and that favours the Deutsch. Takes the pressure off of them. I expect a coin flip result in a close game. And whoever wins this match will undoubtedly take the championship

  9. First real test? and this is germanys walk over game? man oh man. Germany is progressively getting worse. Spain has consistent since day one. Georgias goal was a total fluke

  10. lol they both are the best teams of the tournament so far. Doesn’t matter who’s been tested. It’s going to be interesting match but me personally I believe Spain is going to win and Germany is going to choke.

  11. Badjetic BryanZaragoza Moleiro Barrios RoroRiquelme Cubarsí Mosquera Omorodion Huijsen Veiga NicoGonzález Gavi Baldé Fermín 😂⭐⭐🇪🇦. ✊🏻💧🇬🇧👻

  12. In the Euro Cup, 51 games are played. 44 have already been played. There are only 7 games left to be played. Obviously a mistake leaves you out. Only one wins. If the matches were to play 7 games like in the NBA, I would understand so much argument, but this is football and anything can happen now.

  13. Germany will beat spain and will most likely also win this tournament on their home ground. Spain is talented but too many players on their starting eleven are by far too inexperienced to win a big tournament. The current Germany players are much more experienced and much more successful on international top level (World Cup, Euro or Champions League) then spain. Take a look at the starting eleven from the first ko round (which is most likely also the starting eleven for the quarter final). The German players have played combined a total of approx 750 international games for the national team of Germany compared to approx 340 of the spanish players. Germany is also packed with players who were already very successful at the real big games in international top football (World Cup, Euro, Champions League). They have 2 players (Neuer and Kroos) in their starting eleven who won the World Cup. Spain has 0. Germany has 8 players (Neuer, Kroos, Ruediger, Kimmich, Guendogan, Havertz, Musiala, Sane) in their starting eleven who won the Champions League. Spain just 4 (Morata, Rodri, Carvajal, Laporte). Its not even close!!! People simply dont understand how important experience is if you want to win a big tournament! Since Busquets left spain also dont have a REAL leader anymore.

Spain 2024 remember me of the spanish 2022 WC team. First big show and then at ko stage quickly game over for spain. Spain is a football nation which is historically always struggling when it really matters in the big ko games. This struggeling in the big ko games is their history. Its in their DNA. The only exception to this in spanish football history was the huge Xavi, Alonso, Iniesta era 2008-2012. But such a team is only existing every 100 years and THIS spanish team 2024 is not even close to the 2008-2012 monster spain. Outside these 4 years (2008-2012) spain is historically known as a notorious loser team when it comes to the REAL important and big games at the big World Cup and Euro tournaments. Their statistics during their 100 years of spanish national football team history (outside 2008-2012) is following: 0 World Cup titles, 0 WC finals, 1 WC semi final, 1 Euro title, 1 Euro final. Thats it in 100 years of spanish football outside the Xavi, Xabi, Iniesta era. They didnt reached even ONE SINGLE World Cup final outside this 4 years era!! Thats a DESASTER statistic and shows the historical lack of winning mentality in spanish national team football history! No fanboy blablabla here! Just sheer FACTS!!!

Germany is the exact opposite of spain! 4 World Cup titles, 8 WC finals (world record), 13 WC semi finals (world record), 3 Euro titles (europe record), 6 Euro finals (of course again europe record). You see the difference? Its not luck! Believe me: Its called WINNING MENTALITY!!!! Germany are the masters of winning mentality!!!

I know that some fan boys are saying that Germany won the last time 1988 against spain in a WC or Euro game. Thats true but if you look into the details then its just backing up what I wrote above. Fact is that Germany faced spain 5 times in World Cup or Euro games since 1988. Germany won the Euro game 1988 and there were 2 draws at WC 1994 and 2022. Spain won the other 2 games 2008 and 2010 with 1-0. But that was no surprise because it was exactly this monster era of Xavi, Xabi, Iniesta which I mentioned above. I CLEARY wrote above that this was a monster team but such a team exists only once in 100 years. The current spain 2024 is lightyears away from monster spain 2008-2012. And outside this little time frame of 4 years (2008-2012) spain is known in 100 years of spanish national team football history (as I described above) as notorious losers when it comes to big games at WC or Euro. The truth is that outside this monster era 2008-2012 spain only won 1 single game against Germany at a big tournament in the history of football. It was a group game in the Euro 1984 with 1-0 scored in the 90th minute. So finally its just backing up what I described above.

Germany had a MASSIVE trainer/coach/manager problem during the last 5-6 years because Löw and Flick are very average coaches who did MASSIVE mistakes when they were the coach of Germanys national team. Similar to Southgate who never was/is able to bring England top quality on the pitch. There is a reason why most germans were so happy when Loew and Flick got fired! But now Germany solved this problem and they have with the tactic guy Nagelsmann and german striker legend Rudi Völler a great combination on coach/manager level.

The current Germany has the perfect balance on their team. They have super experienced players who won everything including the World Cup (Kroos, Neuer, Mueller) and they have many mid aged players who won the Champions League (Guendogan, Kimmich, Ruediger, Havertz, Sane) and they have young generation superstars (Musiala, Wirtz).

When you compare the sheer football quality of the current teams then its quite close with a slight advantage for Germany because more german players from their starting eleven already proved that they were successful at hightest international football level. Germany is also physically stronger then spain and they even have the home advantage now! This home advantage and the history are giving Germany a huge mental advantage!

Spain didnt face a powerhouse like Germany yet. This partly unexperienced spanish team will not stand the immense huge pressure which they will face in Stuttgart in front of the german crowd! All these online fanboys simply dont understand how important experience, mentality, physical strenght and home advantage is in such a big game. Trust me guys: This partly unexperienced spain will not survive such a monster ko game against a historical powerhouse like the four times World Champions Germany in front of the german home crowd!

  14. Ja,ja,ja they were bad in purpose just to make things easier to Spain, how evil!!! So Spain didn’t have part in those teams to be bad? And things were hairy in the Georgia match? Sure looking to their beards!🤣😂🤣

  15. It should be can Germany overcome Spain.
Spain has faced better opponents than the Germans. Croatia and Italy still good teams and hard to beat plus faced a georgian team that beat Portugal.
