DOWN GO THE DEFENDING CHAMPS ๐ณ Full Reaction to Italy’s loss to Switzerland | ESPN FC
Italy the defending Euro Champions knocked out by the Swiss in a stadium where they won the 2006 World Cup Remo Freer and Ruben Vargas with both of the goals and there can be no complaints from spalet men let’s welcome in Jurgen and gab now to talk more about it let me start with you gab what happened to Italy in this tournament well okay we knew that you know this wasn’t a particularly talented group and nobody expected them them to be particularly good but nobody expected them I think to be as bad as what we saw against uh against Switzerland today uh this was a completely one-sided performance uh Switzerland may or may not be more talented I’m not sure that they are but they’re certainly more intelligent and they worked harder and they were just the better side on the day and I think you have to point a lot of fingers here and and I don’t often like to do this at the coach at luchano spalti this chopping and changing every game uh after he said we’re going to have a strong identity this certainly hasn’t helped and again delusional after the game I don’t want to hear you say it was really really hot the other guys are Swiss they live in the mountains you don’t think it was hot for them uh you you you bring up things like oh well it hurt us to concede that goal 60 seconds into the into the second half really thank you Captain Obvious uh the other guys were their buildup play was faster than ours gee if only we had a coach that that could tell the players hey build up the build up the play faster uh their players are faster than ours you know what you do have fast players but what happens is dearco out do you replace him with with ro banova who’s arguably the fastest player on the team no you don’t you put on Mato Daran who’s 34 years old who’s not even a left back he’s a center back impersonating a left back uh look I I thought and in the end they asked him do you take responsibility he’s like well as a coach you always have to take responsibility like he didn’t really want to I have much more respect for the players who came out very obviously J donaruma saying we deserve to go out christante saying we were terrible and whatever else and that’s the reality and that’s what I think spalti has to face up to well gab you sound pretty animated about this so you’re not buying the fact that spag spetti spaghetti spetti also said that the other coaches the other Italian coaches has had longer than he had to work with this team oh yes that that was other excuse you know what if manini hadn’t left to go coach in Saudi Arabia and Chase the money you wouldn’t even be in this job I look I I i’ I’ve I don’t know I don’t know what is up with this person he lives in his own world look he’s been siia coach of the year three times he won the title did a phenomenal job with Napoli people speak of him in hush tones like he’s some sort of tactical Savant maybe he is but maybe he is at Club level where you can have endless repetitions where you can do two a days where you can work with your players year round but if you coach internationally and and urgen knows this better than anyone uh you don’t have time you have to make decisions on the flaw you have to read situations you have to read individuals and when it come to that I think spall’s just really been horrendous in this joggen were you surprised to see such a lack of identity in an Italian national side yeah I think we all are really shocked and I I watched the game with Italian commentary and obviously they they went all over the place then in the second half over the team over the the the coach the manager um but it was it was really really sad to see an Italian side I’ve never seen an Italian side with lacking lacking basically everything you know no no aggressiveness which they really good they usually always more aggressive than you are you know they had no no desire to go the extra mile they had no help for each other um there was no leadership I mean donaruma tried a little bit to bring in a bit of energy and and helping his teammates in front of him um the other ones were all quiet and nobody stepped up kza didn’t say a word b Stony didn’t say a word um you looked you looked desperately for somebody doing something do a foul do something just just to to wake everybody up but this this team was nonexistent um against a very strong Swift side they deserve every compliment in the world under the leadership of especially Shaka on the field fantastic SPS performance but what what Italy showed to tonight was was uh was an embarrassment it was it’s a shame this is it’s you you don’t find the words because I know these guys I know how they how they live and die for their country and for their national team for the adui but there was no energy in that team there was no uh nastiness no no desire to do something individual maybe go at somebody like skaka take the ball and just go at a Defender know dribble him one time then shoot from 25 yards just send out a signal do something they didn’t do anything the talent side didn’t do anything to make things better they were just literally waiting until the game was over and and they could go home it was like almost like please let me go on vacation it’s it’s not my summer in Germany and that is uh uh it’s really sad because I I suffer there with a lot of Italian friends you know I got bombarded with text messages from my Italian friends and said what what what was this what we never had that before and uh so this is this will be this is going to be a an earthquake in Italy the next couple of days an earthquake and and God knows that far better from the media side it it’s G to it’s going to go uh to the extremes to spetti comments though I knew you yourself were really surprised Frank with what he had to say about his team having a lack of tempo about him needing players with different characteristics as well in this side you thought it was very very telling that he said this after the game yeah it says a lot about the fact that um for decad now and maybe the the the wind two two years ago in the Euro was the as I say the tree was hidden the the rest of the forest but for decades I don’t recognize the country who brought so many World Cups and so many other trophies that we saw we not talking about a random country we’re talking about Italy Italy showed during the history that they were one of the best if it’s not the best for for for a while you know fighting against Brazil and and maybe Germany but otherwise you know they were the best and I don’t recognize since 2006 the country that I was so hard to to bit and yeah the energy wasn’t there today but there are so many other things that they have to work on uh to make sure that this country or this team goes back to the best of the of their best and um they’re far away from there and thinking that it’s just an accident would be the biggest mistake they would make spetti how much of the blame do you put on him Stevie um my goodness do you know I’m sure I’m sure Italian watching the team perform and will be disappointed the way the players played but if you’re going to go out and you’re going to go out the way they did at least try and try and extract some dignity from it if you’re spetti and all he’s done is throw his players under the boss big time but quite frankly in doing that I think he’s made himself look bad not just because of he’s throwing the players under the bus but Italy went down as though they had no plan and guess who’s responsible for the plan you know the coach G’s talking about a club level you can you can repeat and repeat and repeat and you can do your drills and everything else a coach at this level in International Football has to at least number one get his get his team competitive and get them in some sort of shape where they know what they’re trying to do and if it doesn’t work out or you playing against a better team then everybody can sort of accept it but you you can’t accept this and for me the way spet has gone about it makes himself look bad and throwing the players under the bus is not the way to go what happens to spalletti now then gab well he’s talked about um well now we’re going to sit down we’re going to figure out you know the future going forward blah blah blah he personally I don’t think he’s suited to being a national team coach I I just genuinely don’t he’s done some good things he’s done a lot of weird things in the past maybe even this business you know talk about uh throwing players under the brush he talked about before the game how skaka was lazy maybe that works to motivate maybe if you got a player I challenge him I call him lazy in public but you can’t do that in a tournament with a guy you hardly know because you’ve only just called him up to the national team he needs to start understanding these things and frankly you know spetti is the second or or third highest paid coach coach um at the Euros you look at the other coaches you look at some of these guys who are doing really really well these aren’t fancy coaches maybe that’s not what you need maybe you see a man manager a guy who can come in read situations I don’t need the Tactical Savant especially if he comes from all the with all the baggage and all the weirdness that that spetti takes at the job C we had fireworks behind you there was that the Swiss celebrating no I’m in Berlin I believe those were German celebrations uh there were certainly more than enough Swiss uh celebrating on my ride home from the Olympic Stadium though I can I can understand that Gap is upset I understand why and I I understand the the criticism that you can go you can have towards spalti uh because as you said you know the tactic comes from him and he he he he has to conduct his uh his team but at the end of the day we are talking about national team and um and players who belong in the national team have the maturity and the and the and the knowledge about the fact that they can change the the the game and by their energy and uh and Yogen was talking about it by the way they can feel it and it’s a game of intuition so they they have the possibility to to change it and to talk to each other and we don’t see that we don’t see any character in that team that’s the main issue that they have on top of uh what SP not able to uh to to do and to achieve with the national team but the players they didn’t do anything I didn’t see any reaction from from the from the players did you just want to say something that Gab no look it’s fine you could I I I think I I I agree and obviously look Frank’s been there and we know how how players and leaders can can step up you know certainly I was there I thought somebody like barela tried to do it they do have players with with personality but I think when you create an environment like this when you go into the tournament telling everybody How brave you are how you’re going to you know press and pass and oh look I brought these young players in look at funu look at banova look how wonderful these young guys are and then what do you do you give me Daran you give me christante you give me Stefan El sharawi who I think most people assumed had retired years ago he didn’t retire he went to China and instead he and then he’s been sitting on the bench the last four years at Roma when you when you go in a totally different direction I think it’s pretty Soul destroying to the guys who are out there when you drop georgino again that’s another one oh look uh well georgino I actually think he dropped georgino partly because of this range of passing nonsense and partly because like a lot of Italian people and uran can black me up on this he’s superstitious and georgino is the Bad Luck Charm who missed those two penalties against Switzerland in the two games and qualifying for the 22 World Cup and that’s why he’s not there I mean I I don’t know I’m sorry I am annoyed the players squad’s incomplete a lot of the players aren’t good enough but they certainly certainly cannot justify this sort of performance and spetti wasn’t part of the solution he was most definitely part of the problem and they absolutely cannot complain about the fact Jurgen that it is Switzerland who are now going on to the quarterfinals because they completely deserve to be absolutely I mean they played outstanding I mean they did everything right they showed you know the spirit from the beginning on they they put Italy Under Pressure they they they won every second ball I think Jaca played a fantastic match as as their leader FR with this beautiful goal that he he he scored um a brilliant absolutely a brilliant swis team um but they they took advantage of that weak performance from Italy they took advantage of for of the fact that the Italians didn’t want to give them a real fight they didn’t want to step up to them didn’t show any nastiness they didn’t show any fight in them and and then they they cruise through the game they probably were surprised as much as we all were in front of the TV that that it was actually so easy to beat Italy the first time since 31 years uh this is incredible this is unbelievable and they deserve a huge huge compliment they will now face the winner of England against Slovakia you see Switzerland is are forced to be reckoned with and a team to not be underestimated well I guess the toughest thing is to work out were Switzerland that good today or were Italy just a bit of a shambles what do you say I say that Switzerland absolutely if if we if england go through which we expect and if they don’t Slovakia as well if they perform with a maturity and the calmness the way they did against Italy today then they will be they will be a fight for anybody you know Switzerland’s aide that on their day can beat anybody in this tournament no question including France who I think are the favorites so yeah I think Switzerland were excellent they were made to look even better probably by a poor Italian side but the they’ve got of strength at the back experience they’ve got legs I mean they’ve got knowhow they’ve got all the things you need as a unit unfortunately for gab just all the things that Italy showed us today they don’t have LTI they call they are called I’ve proved uh for couple of years and I remember the Euro you know kicking out the the French in the quarterfinal um that they have the quality to go far and to uh uh upset big Nations so of course if england think that they’re going to go through against Slovakia and and then after maybe beat easily beat the Swiss they are wrong they’re going to be they’re going to be kicked back so they have to respect them make sure they have all ingredients otherwise they’re going to suffer we saw today it came from everybody frer Shaka and Ando uh reader at the back with aeni they’re very strong so it’s going to be it’s going to be tricky to every te was going to confront the the Swiss gab you get your final say here on Switzerland look I I think this is this is a great example there’s a story in there uh back in October Switzerland played bellus at home with two minutes to go they were Lo they were 3-1 down they somehow scored two goals in the final minutes Drew 3-3 yaken afterwards said something really really dumb saying like well he was asked about the defensive organization he’s like well we don’t really to prepare defensively against a team like belus he was absolutely slaughtered for it people wanted him sacked and look where is he now he’s in the quarterfinals uh of the euros and and then people like Stevie are saying all these wonderful things about him I think this shows how things can change but you have to have empathy you have to understand the mood you have to understand uh the your players and the job around you all qualities that luchano spalti hasn’t shown at least not with the Italy side [Music]

Oh, I remember saying before this game that Switzerland are stronger than Denmark and the matches against Italy and Germany have proven that finally yesterday.
How can you play with Fagioli. A gambler.
Xhaka, boom, boomโฆ๐ฝ๐ฐ
Switzerland a team! And then there is England !
Arrivederci
It's weird seeing Frank in the studio ๐๐
Italy thought its a friendly game
Gabriella is so emotional today
Even tho heโs so experienced I get this vibe from spaletti that the whole thing is too big for him and heโs using the big stage for self promotion.
Reminds me of that weird Argentina coach (Sampaoli?) who got gangsta tats right before the World Cup, would come out to the bench in a suit, demonstratively take it off a minute into the game and prance around in a muscle shirt and prison tattoos the whole game. I think the whole team h8ed him.
My biggest fear is where does Italy go from here?! ๐คทโโ๏ธ
I don't see them having any defensive excellence that Italian football is known for, saw zero clear cut chances and no organised build up play ๐คฆ๐ปโโ๏ธ
Need to start with a coaching change and hope that Italy produce a prolific striker at the highest level within 2 years
Italy lacks speed and their fastest player, Bellanova, who is very fast, doesn't play one second.
๐ฎ๐She's MIGHT just be the most humble and heartwarming person to existโคโคโค๏ธ
Xhaka Maestro manhandled Italy.
I liked this segment. Nicol didn't talk that much.
Spalletti must go!
I'm Italian. Swiss played brilliantly end of argument. Best team one. Italy are still rebuilding and trying new things with a new manager, who only had 10 games before the tournament. They will come back better. ๐
Spalletti's disaster. 1 for 1 switzerland does not have a better squad than Italy but if you play darmian LB, bastoni with calafiori, chiesa on the right and with a back 4 whilst bringing 10 defenders you're an arrogant buffoon. Congrats to the only team that played today. We played against switzerland, not prime brazil. When you have a good manager you can win even with a mediocre team (like us 3 years ago).
I don't know if it is true, but if coach Spaletti disrespecting players before the match, publicly: " Scamacca is lazy"๐ . They should fire him
Croatia would have given Swiss tougher game.
Spaghetti is better then the England manager.
Lols I also thought El Sharawway was retired. Shocked to see him play
That might be the worst Italy performance Iโve seen in my entire life. Lambs vs. Wolves.
Italy can't be good. England beat them home and away in the qualifiers.
It was Spaghetti's fault
Italy play the Southgate systemโฆ.
8-1-1 Sideways & Backwards
Englandโs turn today, no left back, 3 right backs ๐ฎ
Whenever United ain't playing Stevie so silent may stream from home
A bunch of snails. Snooze fest.
Marcotti's completely delusional about Italy's problems. The bigger issue is that Switzerland had the better XI on the pitch, in addition to being better organized. Italy is not producing talent and it's a reality that Marcotti doesn't have the courage to face.
AKANJI IS THE WALL….A GREAT PLAYER๐๐๐ช๐ช๐ช
The Italian coach doesn't have any clue or know how to select players….should sack the coach and remove some players
level of serie a is nowhere near the best leagues in the world and unlike french or swiss players who go out to play in best leagues , the italian players prefer to stay in serie a which has made italian national team as poor as this in last decade or so
Spaghetti๐๐๐
Oh yeah, the vaunted superior level of European futbol.
Scots had a very hard group compared to England's group, let's do a fact check from FIFA. Serbia/32, Slovenia/45, Denmark/23, now England is playing Slovakia which has a population of 2m and FIFA ranking of 43!!! England has now played a top 10 nation how does that work ๐๐๐๐๐
A pub side won Euro 2020. Ciao England.
So much of Italy gonna beat England again lol ๐ the last two teams at the final the last tournament have played terrible in this competition!!!! ๐
Xhaka back to Arsenal please
Spaghetti is ok ๐ much better than Spalletti ๐
Italian kids are killed with tactics at 9 years of age ! They are not free to be creative and dribble past players. Coach Mancini had to call 16 years old Pafundi but what other coaches did with him ? Sent him to the U19. He had to leave Serie A to play regularly. In Italy they simply do not like number 10s nomore. But then Spalletti played Barella trequartista against Switzerland. ๐
People can say they have never seen an Italian side play so badly etcโฆ Iโve just read a BBC report on this match & it says that Luchino Spalletti could never replicate the form that took Napoli to Seria A success last year with the national side. Firstly these are entirely two different worlds. It took Spalltti three years before he perfected a method which led Napoli to Italian champions. He didnโt have three years at the national side. He was only in the job less than a year. Gary Liniker says that this is the worse Italian side he has ever seen. Maybe? The 1970โs were not that kind either to the Italian national side with no shows in the European Championships a first round 1974 World Cup exit in group containing Haiti. No Italian side winning the European Cup either. Roberto Mancini won the European Championships after being in the job three years with a lockdown year in which no football was played but enough time to keep tinkering with the side. I think people are completely jumping to short term conclusions.
Italy win something every 10-15 years. They are still a force. Just not this time. Main problem is a great striker and a great central midfielder.
Seems Italian squad have some problems with Spaletti.. they were playing ball in euro Matches after vs Albania for just 14'-17' everymatch..
Seemed like they did'nt want to be there .
Well done Switzerland, the dark horse might go all the way. They play as a team.
it will be miracle if they will pass into quarter final.
next are England (vs Switzerland if they survive vs Slovakia before) if they will play boring lazy game as Italy
I'm from England, I can't see us beating Switzerland if we get by Slovakia.
"It was too hot" is also very funny because a) Berlin wasnt even the hottest and by far not the most humid place in Germany at the time and b) in 2006 when Italy won the July was by far the hottest month in recorded german weather history.
IT'S COMING ROME ๐คฃ๐คฃ
This wasn't Italy , it was that bad
The entire Italy technical team and management were outclassed by Xhaka and the levekrusen mentality ๐
