Last Saturday at UFC Saudi Arabia, former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker (26-7) returned to action, defeating Ikram Aliskerov (15-2) in under two minutes. Whittaker was initially set to fight Khamzat Chimaev, who withdrew due to illness, prompting Aliskerov to step in. This victory marks Whittaker’s second consecutive win since his loss to current champion Dricus Du Plessis last summer. Whittaker is ranked third in the middleweight division, following champion Israel Adesanya and Sean Strickland (29-6). @NinaDrama
Strickland recently secured a dominant decision victory over Paulo Costa at UFC 302. Following the fight, Strickland stated his intention to wait for a title shot. Strickland had previously defeated Adesanya in September to claim the title but lost it to Du Plessis in a close split decision, which many, including UFC CEO Dana White, believed Strickland should have won.
Strickland has expressed disinterest in fighting Whittaker after UFC Saudi Arabia. He took to social media to address the calls for him to face Whittaker, stating his focus is on the winner of the upcoming title bout between Adesanya and Du Plessis. Despite Whittaker’s recent victories, Strickland remains uninterested in a fight against the former champion, citing Whittaker’s two losses to Adesanya and knockout by Du Plessis as reasons. Strickland believes his dominant performance against Adesanya and the close fight with Du Plessis justify an immediate rematch.
Given his recent performances and the close nature of his fight with Du Plessis, Strickland feels he deserves another title shot. The UFC, however, scheduled a bout between Adesanya and Strickland agreed to a five-round fight with Costa as a favor to the promotion. Strickland’s decision to wait for a rematch with either Adesanya or Du Plessis is understandable.
For Whittaker, a potential matchup with Nassourdine Imavov could be on the horizon, possibly taking place when the UFC returns to Paris. The winner of that fight might then face the winner of the Strickland versus Adesanya/Du Plessis rematch.
