and with that the group stage of Euro 2024 is finished heartbreak for some varying degrees of heartbreak Ukraine with the record setting heartbreak based on their point total that’s terrible hello and welcome back to euro daily guys now I of course will go over the round of 16 matchups but I won’t go into any depth as far as setting them up over the next 48 hours or so I will release a full round of 16 preview video covering every matchup and of course we’ll provide a prediction in there for you prediction perverts let’s get into this starting over over in group E Ukraine versus Belgium and Ukraine actually fielded the youngest starting 11 that this tournament has seen thus far and what I would like to see was dock having a strike partner out there in Roman yamuk who also deserved a start due to the quality and heroics he brought to the last match against Slovakia it won’t win goal of the tournament by any stretch but that touch to control and then another to just guide the ball past the keeper was very sexy for belgi similar in the attack but with trassard replacing lucab bakio on the right backline and Midfield were the same however while Ukraine had the first attempt on goal it was relatively tame and the best opportunity early in the match fell to uh-oh Lukaku and what would he do with just the keeper to beat he scuffed his finish and it turned into an easy collect for anat trouin ah Lukaku man but Ukraine were also carving out opportunities well perhaps that’s generous at least in this early part of the match they were at least getting Alleyways to strike it goal testing C steals with a swerving strike and then Dolph bck hitting one wide just 30 seconds later Belgium didn’t really pick up from where they left off against Romania where they were flying about the pitch and looking super dangerous on the counter Ukraine weren’t giving them the opportunity to do so they were set up well in that regard they saw the Belgium Tintin inspired kits and said nah we aren’t going down easy against the Tintin team not the Tintin team and Ukraine continued to poke and PR at that backline while de bruyne nearly stole a goal from a free kick but trouin did well to get down and save it there was a moment right before the half where Ukraine passed their way right through the heart right through the middle of Belgium and yamuk had just casals to beat but decided to square to Dove bck and it was Out Of Reach bad decision should have backed himself Ukraine had many opportunities to win this match I’ll say that now Belgium began to take control in the second half and dku was the man that was typically behind the danger and all things positive from Belgium he played a lovely ball through the six-yard box in the 58th minute and there wasn’t a tin man in sight to convert it Yan carasco he came on also forced a fantastic save out of trouin but Ukraine again continued to trouble the Belgian back line and even from a corner in the 83rd minute castile’s nearly conceded directly he nearly conceded an olympico how he kept that out super impressive on the line back and fourth desperation at the end of this match Boko came close then melanowski nearly ruptured all of Timothy cang’s internal organs with one of his Rockets from the edge of the Box sudakov made a brilliant run as well but he shot the ball directly to castile’s in the goal that could have been the moment that Ukraine sealed their progression and thus eliminated Belgium completely but that goal never came for them to Romania and Slovakia which was a very balanced match early well throughout really with Advantage perhaps going to Slovakia and they exploited a moment of Romania’s LAX defending after 20 minutes a beautiful ball into the box from Kuka yes but Andre dudo was all alone for a free header really and he did well to pick out the corner Duda solid performer this tournament for Slovakia also the scorer of their first ever European championships goal back in 2016 so a little a little trivia there for you yanis thought that perhaps he had won a penalty in the 34th minute but it was a weird one first touch was a little one on the foot on the outside of the box so not a penalty second touch that brought him down was a shin to Shin in the Box the ruling was that the second touch was what brought the player down and hey that makes sense to me so it was a penalty and from the penalty spot Marin with a perfect conversion nearly ripped the net off of it more whatever the pegs things that keep it on the ground moing I don’t know moing ripped it off it moing pegs anchors and take what you will anyway second half in Slovakia we in the ascendency Thunder scared the hell out of me man did you guys hear that in the broadcast insanely loud thunder crack anyway despite Slovakia looking good early it was Romania who had two stunning efforts and quick success s session first there was minin with the no runup strike at goal that was saved by duka and then Drago absolutely thrashed the ball as he cut inside and it just went over the bar that was a ridiculous strike they like to hit the ball hard these Romanians harassin one of their top performers in this tournament just bent one wide in the driving Reign but back and forth they would go the match ended at 1:1 and so what did that mean for the standings same amount of points for all four teams and in spite of that it’s Ukraine who are eliminated thanks to that 3-n loss to Romania in the first game Slovakia are thre in third Belgium second Romania and first heartbreak for Ukraine man I feel for them first time any team has gone out with four points in this sort of third place format that UEFA brought in in 2016 for the Euros turkey versus czechia and Turkey were certainly helped out by czechia attacker anonim badak who got himself sent off after just 20 minutes thanks to two yellows in that time span really silly stuff from the guy putting his country in such a precarious and difficult position right away sometimes I almost feel like that’s worse getting the two yellows in quick succession than the red cuz red you make one mistake two yellows that’s two dummy mistakes and quick succession chea did manage to hang on in the first half as turkey really struggled to generate good opportunities even after badak was sent off in fact the best opportunities in the first half still fell to check yet as turkey never really looked settled that could be because Montella keeps changing their lineup all the time now in the second half turkey were improved but again when it comes to the actual threatening opportunities I would still give CIA the edge for much of the half until we got toward the end of it at least however the goal of the match was undoubtedly scored by turkey with hakan chalunu putting on a how to strike the ball Clinic with that hit put his laces through it playing in the stadium he used to call home and put turkey ahead finally however CIA wer dead yet they made it interesting down a man having to defend a ton against turkey they managed to get an equalizer through their Captain Thomas susek which was a scrambly one turkey thought that their keeper had control of the ball clear that he didn’t upon reviewing everything good goal 1 one at that point scary I think if you’re Turkish overall you’re disappointed with the performance as it did not look as if Turkey had an advantage on the pitch over 70 minutes a man up and then they finally scor to Win It Chen tosun the German born Turkish Striker came on as a sub and scored the winner for turkey to put them ahead and win the match 21 now let’s get to the other one where history was made I get it Portugal rotated their team a ton just three starters remained from the turkey match but they were frustrating to watch once again it felt like the Santos era once again and again I get it the officiating was a little slanted in some respects and they should have at least looked at this moment when Cristiano Ronaldo was getting groped and assaulted by the Georgian defender in the Box this is a foul anytime this happens outside of the box so why not look at this it was impeding him from getting to the ball but that’s okay I also understand that Georgia were kept in this match by their keeper again and they were helped greatly by Antonio Silva putting in two moments of Madness to give Georgia two goals and that Georgia were playing extremely well on the counter they wanted this result they played with pace and they put in far more effort but I still don’t think that this was an acceptable performance from Portugal and it did sort of contextualize further performances in this group stage didn’t it not good were Portugal really that good against turkey not really two goals were a gift were they that good against a very negative checka not really an own goal and then a Defender slipping and missing another ball and so when you mix all of that along with Georgia playing fantastic stuff and a referee that wasn’t so into the Portuguese players this was the result you had Antonio Silva giving Georgia the ball early allowing them to counter against two Defenders and velia got his first goal of this tournament lovely finish from him low P Diogo Kosta that’s an incredible way to start the match Portugal took about 25 minutes to settle in this one and once they did they began getting some chance against a strong Georgian defense 11 attempts in the first half not all of them that dangerous but mamar Das had the answer to the other ones in the second half Portugal had their chances and they either failed to take them or my took them from them the save he made on doot in the second half twice actually what a keeper man and after gifting the first goal Antonio Silva gifted Georgia a second one with a silly softish penalty no need to take a swing like that stand your ground I love my Benfica boys but that was a night to forget for him soft as that penalty may have been you know mik T converts for his third goal as he leads the Golden Boot race now a goal per game what a man what a performance from Georgia in general so Georgia and czechia give the rest of the tournament the handbook on how to really frustrate Portugal sit deep stay compact slow the game down because Portugal won’t speed it up they play Slow under Martinez then counter with speed for Georgia playing in their first Euro they make it out of the group stage and how to gain their place in the round of 16 by not just getting a result against Portugal like a draw or something but beating them 2-n that’s got to be the result of the tournament thus far right Portugal’s poor form and rotated lineup is irrelevant in that scope these guys weren’t supposed to make it out of this group and they thoroughly deserve to the only team they beaten qualifying was Cyprus they got here by beating Luxembourg and then Greece in a shootout so group F concludes with Portugal in first despite not looking great in this tournament thus far turkey in second and Georgia in third cck you they’re out and now we can look at the full list of round of 16 matchups Spain will take on Georgia Germany versus Denmark Portugal versus Slovenia and France versus Belgium that’s one side of the bracket now here’s the other Romania versus the ne Netherlands Austria versus Turkey England versus Slovakia and Switzerland versus Italy so there you have it as I mentioned the in-depth preview will be out either Thursday or Friday depending on how much I Yap in it and I’ll take one of those days
