in you know that expression the more things change the more they stay the same that’s really what that implied but for this set of England players who always had the public behind them and the media behind them up till now this is a new situation that people are a little bit ansy but they’ve also got an extra element haven’t they which previous generations never really had I think you you you you can’t hide from the fact that there are more voices there’s more access to them there’s more there’s more content about them you know in respects of the the world that they live in now as professional footballers and you heard him say there about the mental side of it and I totally agree with him you know you see comments like they they they’re soft and you know they can’t take criticism where they they’ve got they are made of stern and stuff with what they have to deal with you know they’ve deal they’ve done like since 66 they the first men’s final since 66 G is one of our best managers since so Al Ramsey what these players have to go through in respects of the amount of um the amount that comes from these platforms it’s the increase in Social Media isn’t it it does do something you can hear you hear them say about how it affects the young players it must affect them I I’m glad they replied just like he’s saying about the opinion people have their right to their opinion people have the right to to to reply and I’m quite pleased they’ve done that they’re going to be under pressure now because people say things like oh let’s see what you oh you’re worried about the criticism you should be worrying about the game they know that they’ve made a decision to come out on the front foot the two senior players Harry Kane and Dean rice and what I would say is about ex- England players and we’ve seen a great thread there over 25 years of players that have played for England in the studios we you don’t want to see them these Lads make the same mistakes that we made we got pushed back into a low block we got pushed back into a situation where we couldn’t get out we didn’t have the passing solutions to get out from the back we got back into a situation in 27 degree heat where at the end of the games we were knackered looking like these Lads have looked in the last two games we’ve been there and what this group of players over the last six years have done really well is not get involved and dragged into the weeds they just got dragged into the Le the weeds a little bit in the last few days which is fine they’re entitled to come out and have a goal but I would say that the reality is they have to try and get control Ro of the football match that is the most important thing England teams have never been able to do that in 20 years we do have technical players here and they’re not able to do it still but an with the rise of social media you know of any given Saturday the full-time whistle goes you’re walking down the tunnel back to the dressing room and your players within five minutes could be finding out what people are saying about them and they may say oh well I don’t look at it but mom might do an agent might do and brother might do and you know sister might do so it’s so hard and is there’s nothing you can do is there really to Shield them from yeah I look at it through a different prism I think we look at that from our perspective what I found young people they’re a lot more mature about it than we think they are I we’ve seen 16 year olds rip it up in this tournament okay so I don’t think sometimes when you’re in Camp particularly national team you do feel Under Siege because all the information sort of incoming is through one or two sources whereas your Club football you go out for a walk somebody will see you give you a bit of a you a cheer up message or whatever and you get a better perspective I I don’t know if they’re protecting the young players who are they protecting they’re not protecting Cole Palmer he hasn’t played yet you know they’re not protecting um e they’re not protecting some of the ones who so I think it’s more of them as I said before I’d rather they went out tonight not prove people wrong but just make a statement play you know and what Dean said at the end there is perfect go out there and make like you’ve seen already de bruy the other night he went out there to make a statement you know Modric I got knocked out but he went out there to make a statement that’s what this platform is all about and you’ve watched those interviews there and you’ve seen England play for 20 years and the way in which you play football what would you do and I don’t want to put you on the spot here but with that current group of players that England have at their disposal what would you be doing today what would be the big message that you would send them out to well as I said before I think you know you it’s a free hit today where we go out there and make an impact make an impact in the tournament you as an individual how many euros a major tournaments you’re going to play in don’t waste the game don’t just think about getting a point or two points to finish top take this 95 100 minutes to make yourself known Phil foden to make yourself known on the world stage we know you’re an unbelievable footballer but to do that the the whole team has to have that mindset you know they’ve got to go out there today and just take the game and control the game and and try and score goals be exciting Roy I’m thinking what French TV are doing right now they’ve come second in their group they haven’t scored a goal from open play I mean I just think it’s all going off my point being that since since mankind evented television this has gone on doesn’t matter what the sport is and what the country is that former players have said things because they are now pundits and they’re not cheerleaders they said things I I definitely think the modern player does seem to be a bit more delicate to criticism I know there’s more more of it as a social media particularly but again it’s up to these players I judge them by I judge players by actions and we know how quickly football changes England get put on a good performance to win tonight Dean rice is talking about show some love listen come on it’s it’s serious stuff as well it’s football stuff people made you sacrifices to travel you get the love back when you perform we all played at a decent level and when things are going great people are patting you on the back but the reality is if you’re not performing you get criticized no nobody likes to be criticized but it is part of your journey almost I feel like sent to some players I know people think I’m a dinosaur I’m at old school but sometimes it is case of listen roll your sleeves up these are s these These are such a talented group of players won’t perform and I tell you you get plenty of plaed you can change it around very quickly say no I was just when you when you look at them like we we’ve seen that they do get um a bit of criticism but something’s pushed them over the edge because like you rightly said there and you know yes you want to see them go out and perform and and answering that way but they believe for whatever reason they have to say something the reason they should have the right to reply absolutely absolutely but what you’re saying they’ve said it great they know what they know what comes of it now going do it cuz you can change I’m not quite buying into this last six years that these players have been criticized as much as the players in 20 years I’m not buying into that at all you’re not buying you’re not buying into the the amount of access towards them social media that’s something these these Lads for six years have been to be fair lorded for their performances they’ve played really well rightly so absolutely they made a final they made a semi AB so they’ve had this is the first first time probably that they’re coming under a little bit of criticism when England used to go out in group phase on not qualify for tournaments we were killed rightly so as well so this this is not major criticism they haven’t seen it yet properly you may be talking from an England perspective but they’re getting it on a weekly basis
