‘Very poor’ – Lineker and Shearer on England draw | Uefa Euro 2024 | BBC Sport

I think it’s fair to say Alan that was quite frustrating yeah it was very poor it wasn’t uh it wasn’t good enough and listening to uh to Kyle Walker’s interview we’ve all been there as players and yes you do try and take the positive and yes it is tournament football but it’s our job and the coach’s job to dissect what’s gone wrong and there’s plenty to look out there I mean where where do you start no energy no gu I wouldn’t say a lack of effort not not trying but there’s so much more to come from those players out there and look at Jude tonight I mean he he he couldn’t put one front in the other in front of the other he couldn’t get forward I look at Phil foran on the left is he is he affecting the game no no chance and I look at sacka that I mean and Harry Kane I know he’s got his I know he’s got his goal and I mentioned it in uh in commentary about running in behind at least when Watkins came on the Defenders were running in behind so yeah it was um it was it was really really poor and um and it is concerning absolutely what what do you think it is that this team that pretty much all the players in it are spectacularly successful uh in the Premier League they all play they used to play in a high press very much in the opposition’s half but but when they’ve played for England in these two games they”re very much sat back there’s barely a press from the top right through there’s big gaps between the front and the back or they either that or they play in a really low block what why do you think that is is that coming from the coach well let’s let’s use JN Stones as an example how many times do you see him get the ball and run into Midfield or get the ball with his back and turn in the Man City team so many times he’s brilliant at it how many times have you seen him do it in the last two England games I can’t remember any how many times do you see de and rice getting that ball and bursting forward how many times have you seen him doing an England shirt in the last two games none how many times do you see Phil foran get on the ball in the middle of the park turn maybe once tonight when he had the shot and he hit the post so he’s Gareth at the minute is not getting the best out of England’s best players uh what about up front Alan um Harry Kane we know he’s a spectacular finisher he has been for a hell of a long time um scored a gain in this game um his overall contribution there was very little movement from him he was he was pretty static I don’t know whether he was tired or U One Touch in the Box I think in the game U what does he do about that because obviously when Watkins came on you had a threat behind it stretches them a little bit more you could probably press what’s your position on it well I I me I sort of mentioned it in in commentary Gary about when when I when I got into my 30s and I’d lost a yard or a half a yard of pace I needed legs around me I needed pace around me I could still hold the ball up I could still head it I still had a good touch I could still score goals but the one thing I constantly couldn’t do was running behind so he he needs players in and around him to do that I would do that that’s why I would have Gordon in the team cuz he has the energy he has the ability to run and behind he has the ability to get up near him whereas when when when foran’s doing that foron wants to be Titan playing the 10 role very much like Harry Kane does he’s a brilliant goal scorer he’ll always score goals but what he does lack is he he lacks that yarn and he lacks that energy someone else can do it someone else can do it alongside him can I remind you Alan that when it happened to you you retired from International Football well that’s one of the reasons why I retired from International Football Gary because I couldn’t do it it both for England and for Newcastle with the energy and with my lack of peer Harries into 30s now he’s he’s never really been the quickest he can still make really good runs but he does need Pace in and around him and that’s why I would have played Gordon what do you think on this guy you’ve played in this positions you was great at spinning the channels what’s your thoughts on this in all honesty I think Harry kanane needs to do a lot better I think his movement was was minimal um he didn’t look to go behind and he doesn’t often but even when he comes short he’s just drifting short very kind of lethargically he’s plooding short and there’s that’s not going to help so when you when you’re you’re a striker your two jobs are obviously score goals which is brilliant he has been all his career and he’s wonderful at that sort of thing but I think he needs I think he needs his manager to say right I need a little bit more from you Harry I would have expected that if I’d have had that kind of performance because when you as a striker let me tell you he’s up against three at the back so he has got to stretch that team even when he comes short you’ve got to go that way first to keep them up there and then you come short so when you get the ball coming short you don’t have to go 20 yards to get it short like he ambles in ambles him and they just let him go so you don’t get it so he’s not creating the space for himself for a start and vice versa and he’s never really been a player that spins that much behind but it’s the same thing if if someone’s in Midfield if someone’s in Midfield and got the ball you and you want it behind you go that way first and then you go behind and then you stretch the team if you’ve got someone going behind you can stretch that the team and that creates more space for the Midfield players behind you but in his defense even when that happened on occasions um there wasn’t enough of the Midfield pushing up from behind so you’ve it’s it’s a whole team thing but he has to you know he I I totally agree but there is no variation in the way he’s playing so to give the defender something to think about if he’s always coming short and just kind of being labored in that respect me as a Defender I’m not having any about him going that way so I could just condense the pitch the whole time but isn’t it that what he’s done the last four or five years then just has Runners I think the key is the runners so we need runners run I think he’s doing what he’s done and done very well in the team exactly n maybe yeah or other runners or fen’s going or Jude is going behind and he got one touch in the box of course that’s good back of ended in the back of the net uh but he didn’t get enough service maybe or they maybe didn’t put enough thing I think he gets frustrated and I think sometimes when he does that he ambles back and amles back and he wants to play his part defensively in the team but if if you’re playing fairly deep anyway and your Striker comes deep as we saw on some of those clips that Micah showed it it exacerbates the issue

BBC pundits discuss England’s performance against Denmark, which saw Harry Kane score the opening goal before Morten Hjulmand’s equaliser.

‘Very poor’ – Lineker and Shearer on England draw | Uefa Euro 2024 | BBC Sport

  1. Absolute dog sh!t display by England. Kane looks out of shape and carrying extra weight shall we say. Focus on the football lads instead of messing about in your luxury training base and playing golf

  2. Shearer is such a sell out. A man of incredible pride and always been admired for his strength of character in backing his own…. Listen to him now. Faking his media energy too.

  3. honestly I don't think we should go through to semis. Southgate after this will leave and get a manager that actually uses players to their strengths and not their weaknesses.

  4. Lets talk about how good the Hjumands goal was. Naaah, we are England, lets just talk about how bad England was, it has nothing to do with the opposition.

  5. England is being used as a diversity experiment by the FA, Southgate and woke scummers like lineker. Disgraceful attacks on Kane post match without mentioning anyone else. Lineker acting as an agent for watkins and toney.

  6. Bla, bla, bla.
Maybe it's just because you are incredibly overestimating the quality of your team? The premier league is the best in the world thanks to the many foreign players. In national tournaments, with only English players: just average to good team. Nothing more. Blame the coach? Would be the same result with another coach. Quit the arrogance of "we're bringing it home", you are not going to win just because you are England: you're not good enough. Period.

  7. The team is so frustrating because Southgate has completed a jigsaw by smashing the wrong pieces together in the wrong places and the picture is all muddled. A right-back is left back, a right-back is playing centre-midfield, an attacking-midfielder is playing left-wing. You can set-up a solid attack, playing from the back, with the squad that is taken, however taking one left-footed left-back was always a concern. If Soutgate didn't take Chillwell, he should have taken Leif Davis from Ipswich, at least in the preliminary squad and trialled him in the friendlies… Last game of the group, we need to change it up. I'd play:

    GK: Jordan Pickford
    RB: Kyle Walker
    CB: John Stones
    CB: Mark Guehi
    LB: Joe Gomez
    CDM: Adam Wharton
    CDM: Declan Rice
    RW: Bukayo Saka
    CAM: Phil Foden
    LW: Anthony Gordon
    STR: Harry Kane

    See how it goes.

  8. Pre tournament they lost to Iceland
    What were they expecting
Lucky to hang on for the win against Serbia
Even luckier to hang on to the draw with Denmark
Absolutely boring and frustrating to watch those talented players malfunction so badly

  9. Both wingers and fullbacks need to penetrate deeper into the halfway line, believing in Kane. In midfield matches, penetration should take place more often, and when an opponent falls down, England must wide both sides and attract the opponent. Always build up of fullbacks, wingers and midfielders on the side to create space to target the down opponent with cutbacks. A prepared set-piece strategy should be the next best option.

  10. Exacty the same discussion like about the german team in germany two years ago… The lions are too tame, man! Something is holding all the talents back. But good luck, england!

  11. Pundits and fans need to realise that Ingurland is in the same league as Uruguay, Greece, Sweden; one hit wonders and only with home advantage. That’s your level. You think you are in the same league as Spain, Germany, Italy, Argentina, France – all who have played multiple finals. Respect the fact you are an Everton or Brighton level sort of team.
