I have never seen such a bland Italian side since the world cup in Mexico in 1986. An atrocious midfield, mediocre defense and horrible offense. All average players, except for Donnaruma and Barella…a real embarrassment…two missed world cups, and this is the team Spalletti puts together. We are moons away from the Scireas, Gentiles, Cannavaros, Maldinis, Pirlos and Buffones of old.

first half: actually after the first Sturm und Drang phase of Spain got Italy managed to destroy more and more the Spanish game. Problem for Italy was that the not just had no consequent and good counters, they even partly avoided to move forward – plus some really bad passing. If Italy were here more solid then they could have made the game at this point, because Spanish were nice but the entire game quite inefficient.
second half: and again, Spain had not managed to get one own goal. What they managed was a real dangerous pass (there were in reality also not that many) – which then Italy converted into a goal against themself. After some pointless continuation of Italy (that was the chance when Spain should have scored more) Italy got a bit more consequent counters – but still not full consequent. Too much slow down, taking dynamics out, too much backpassing/failed passes and so on. In the last phase they did a bit more and became also more dominant – what they could have done most of the time. This also shows that Spain were solid (their ball handling was most of the time souveraen).

I don't get why everyone is saying Spain dominated Italy. They had great attacking but Italy had fantastic defending just got unlucky with that own goal. Like Italy never really go on the attack so this was a pretty even matchup for me it could have easily ended in a draw.
