The lessons learnt after England’s Euro 2024 opener! | Morning Footy | CBS Sports Golazo

there has been we’ve talked so much about this England side and Nigel Rio Koker sitting at this desk talking about this is the most attack-minded England squad seen so when you have I can’t remember what the numbers are but there were I mean there were just no chances there were hardly any chances created in this did that surprise you for their Opening match that there wasn’t more there wasn’t more of an offensive presence I think it’s a you have to look at the whole picture and people weren’t giving Serbia enough credit for the side that they are okay and how and how difficult they are to break down they’re they’re supremely gifted at fouling you to prevent you from getting into the attacking half so if they do get beat they bring you down the the physicality is definitely something that favored Serbia but they’re also they have some really good players I mean they may be playing in Saudi Arabia but they’re still but shouldn’t England with the squad that they have and the talent that they have shouldn’t in the in the first the first 20 minutes England looked great M Serbia didn’t sniff the ball they couldn’t get close they they look bad they looked like it was trending towards more of a Germany score line just because of the utter dominance of the ball and the control that England had but once they scored I don’t know if it was deliberate that’s a question for South Kate they dropped off the ball they gave it to Serbia and Seria really evened it out towards the end of the match especially at the beginning of the second half it it was anybody’s game at that point South has proven that he’s going to be conservative in these tournaments and it’s you you have a squad now where it’s it almost invites you to stop being that way you know you don’t see Harry Kane dropping off to get the ball anymore and try to get involved you see him waiting up top and part of me is just like what is happening why so few touches why are you letting this just go by why are you letting Serbia get back in this match and that’s exactly what happened from time to time I’ll give their backline credit England’s backline stopped Serbia from really getting any great chances Serbia looked out of it a lot of longrange shots but for the most part this should have been England’s moment where they were typically so bad so bad in the first match of a major tournament that it’s almost a running joke finally you’re you’re up a goal and things look good yo put the foot down on the throttle go for it at the end of the day a win is a win they get all three points but we learned a lot okay so what was the biggest thing that we learned Gareth Southgate the the hesitancy he has in making changes that need to be changed so Phil foden what do you always say about money scar money don’t make no money uh-huh so you look at Phil foden in this game was really quiet and we talk about what how good he was with with pep gordola in Manchester City in that system but in this game he was quiet and you need to make that change early the Midfield like you pointed out they lost control so you needed another presence to stabilize that Midfield cuz Trent Alexander Arnold is gifted as he is with the ball and you’re attack ATT in and if you have possession then man he becomes a real asset but if you don’t he gets pulled out of positions he’s not he’s not the the breakup plays kind of guy in the Midfield so bringing a Conor Gallagher earlier would have suited England Jared Bowen Jared looked good when he came onto the FI and so that my thing is you need to make those substitutions early and those tactical changes earlier and he didn’t he got lucky that that serba didn’t score because they if they would have scored and made it one1 before those subs you would have said Ser deserve to equalize 100% what is the difference between a guy like Phil foden Right who he was he was completely irrelevant in this match he was playing at such a high level arguably like the best player in the world at the end of the the Club season why does that not translate what is it about playing for your country playing for the national team where it the it doesn’t is it just is it simply the style well there’s style of play there’s chemistry there’s movements and patterns and there’s a manager more more it seemed like it was more individual with this English side than obviously it is with Manchester City when you’re low with talent but everyone’s working in the same direction and you have rodri kind of pulling the strings here there’s not that one guy duck and rice is great getting up and down but he’s not a pulling the strings type of midfielder he he breaks up plays and he can get out into transition but in terms of who’s making the game for England there isn’t there isn’t someone who’s saying guys I’m going to spread the ball out I’m going to move even a player like Jude Bellingham it was more him doing all the work himself or trying to create for himself but but you saw Jude young guy you know real opportunity to step into a St Spotlight and he took that opportunity he went he he made himself incisive he made him he went out and and asked for the ball he asked for those opportunities where Phil foden it feels like maybe because he plays under the Pep Guardiola system where you’re asked to do certain things when the ball’s here you stand here when the ball’s here you go over there in a moment like this it’s asked for you to go out and and find the game yourself and he didn’t take that opportunity I I I see what you’re saying but I agree more with Charlie where it was more individualistic at the end of the day the impact that Jude had beyond the goal was very individual was very individual he he was trying to it was almost like it was too much on his plate where you have such a breath of talent on this England squad that you should be able to dictate with much more certainty composure and control and they and and they didn’t and that’s why you can’t get Phil foden in positions for him to succeed more because it it’s it felt disjointed and you know when you look at Liverpool for instance you need some guys like a mallister unselfish guys in the Midfield who are going to do put all the work and that’s why Connor Gallagher fits so well with this team because he is so selfless he’ll do all the dirty work and he’s he’s pretty good at distribution in terms of getting the ball around but kaiaka also kind of on island isolated One V one Do Your Own Thing Harry Kane he checks so deep to get involved and then there therefore you’re missing a deep threat because Phil Fen wasn’t making those runs so the it was almost like a hodge podge type of thing with this English side and if you’re in now we see why even the English supporters the former players that we know H we’re not really with it cuz they don’t see it with G Southgate well again three points is three points um and a win is a win I’m sure that they will take it’ll be interesting to see if Gareth Southgate makes any changes ahead of their match on Thursday against Denmark do you anticipate changes yes I do yeah okay

  1. It’s not enough for reps to show up. If you rep 6000 workers, those 6000 workers should be there. That’s what solidarity means. It’s not the same as “we wish you good luck as you take in the fascist state.” 💚🍓

  2. I personally really liked the attachment looting to fully kit out your guns rather than just building a loadout pregame and rushing to get it which just feels cheesy to me, but the TTK/sweatiness of Blackout definitely made it difficult to play lol 💝🐱

  3. Bring Gordon drop foden .then bring Forden when Bellingham is tired or just hit 60 to 70 minutes time .Foden plays like a 10 also do Bellingham .but I would rather start with Bellingham then Foden .for the wing play Gordon he has pace and also he can cross to the box for Harry kane

  4. England has great players, but tactically the play poor. That was also the reason England lost to Italy back in 2021. Southgate after all this years still didn't manage to find a frame for the team.

  5. World class squad need world class coaches bc they know how to work with big egos, nerves, chemistry like pep, mourinho, etc. Too bad those guys manage club football. Maybe england should hire zidane.

  6. People no nothing about football at all. How can you learn something from the first game of a tournament. Every pundit waffling no matter their nationality

  7. Kane dropping too deep makes the midfield congested and there is no outlet. Counterproductive. Anthony Gordon on the left could have made an impact against that Serbia defence. Toney up front traditional poacher, unless Kane sticks to his position up front. Excellent first half because of Bellingham and Rice

  8. England has as great striker and a good offense but not a great defense. They might be too unbalanced to go all the way. But look at Portugal, France or Germany. They could all w in it if you consider individual players.

  9. Foden got played out of position. He's a number 10 and Southgate played him on the left wing. Jude obviously is the 10 in this team but it felt Southgate is trying to shoe horn Foden in. In the next game he should bench Foden and play Anthony Gordon in that position instead

  10. I commented almost exactly that Serbia were not easy opponents and a win is a win on Men in Blazers live stream, right after the game. Did I write the script? Never any credit, just like Hollywood with my name.
