Police shoot person after being threatened with axe at Euro 2024
has been a serious incident in the city before this match police have shot a man who was threatening people with an axe and a Molotov cocktail video shows the man confronting officers close to where thousands of the Netherlands fans were congregating ahead of the match police pepper spray sprayed the man who refused to give himself up officers then had to shoot the man several times he was taken away in an ambulance with police saying he is seriously injured security at the tournament is a huge priority and let’s join our senior reporter Rob Dorset for more yes we’ve popped over to Essen where there are large numbers of England fans they seem to have congregated here and in Dortmund and in dorf as well rather than GS and cken itself right now but um Chief consal Mark Roberts is here with us the head of the UK football policing unit Mark thanks for your time I know there’s a lot bus it’s a busy day for you briefly about what’s happened in Hamburg first we understand a police officer’s been injured um what can you tell us what do you know about that it’s obviously early days but as you can imagine we are linked in with the ipcc where everyone comes together to get the intelligence so we understand there’s been an incident uh potentially shots have been fired by the police so we’ll just wait and get the details on it nothing to suggest there’s any British involvement obviously it’s some way away in Hamburg from where we are but it’s probably just a reminder there’s a lot of things going on in the world it’s not necessarily link to football so anyway people need to be aware of it be aware of the surroundings and just take care England fans over here in huge numbers how’s it gone so far yeah really well no arrests absolutely no issues foreign office report no issues from a a conselor perspective um so Match Day Match Day minus one’s always really busy but as I say really pleased that there’s been no inance whatsoever obviously a lot of England fans here quite noisy boisterous Etc but delighted to get this far with no issues to report big game for England of course lots of England fans here and it’s the first time we’ve had a a tournament abroad where we’ve expected big numbers of vland fans to travel for a while and as I’ve said are you hearing they’re in the the local cities as well if so what would your advice be to those with tickets and those without tickets tonight yeah it’s it’s really important really just to get it across because the stadium for Shala is is really remote there’s there’s nothing there um so if fans don’t have tickets don’t go uh you’ll find yourself on the outside of a very extensive and secure security perimeter literally almost in a field or a wood there are no bars there there’s nothing to see uh so if you’re not got a ticket please don’t travel um for those fans with tickets give yourself plenty of time uh as I say it’s not somewhere where you can just jump into a taxi you need to have plans set yourself out nice and early make sure you get there um you know I think we’re all finding that the myth about German trains order ring on time isn’t exactly true uh so don’t leave it to the last minute make sure you get there in time and enjoy yourself because people spent a lot of money you don’t want to get there and either be stuck in a queue waiting to get in and missing the kickoff or if you not got a ticket you’re not even going to be able to watch it because there’s no bars or anything there to uh to go into if people do want to come to gsen Kirk and key if they have plans to I know that’s how you’d phrase it there it a big fans Park and You’ urge people to go there rather than the city center yeah absolutely I mean the setup the the everything you want there there’s you can get a drink something to eat the screen of the games you know I think we saw with the Scots they they went really well there was large numbers but it was abs absorbed and managed so make use of those facilities enjoy the game enjoy the atmosphere uh but don’t put yourself in a difficult position by traveling when you’ve not got a ticket to the stadium sorry in terms of the planning for this I know it takes months years in the planning for you guys and you’ve been leing very closely with the German police how’s that going so far yeah it’s going really well um obviously the first few days of a tournament there’s always a few lot things to iron out but the cooperation is great most important thing is they want to work with us they listen to to us there’s a good dialogue the officers who you know have been about striking up a really good rapport with the Germans um so again it’s it’s working really well and you know as you say it takes an awful lot of planning we’ve started the planning for Euro 2028 already and similar the Germans have been a long time in the making for this so again few things to iron out but fundamentally it’s going really well Mark thank you very much for your time that’s Chief conable Mark Roberts there he’ll never say the phrase so far so good but I can use that phrase so far so good from an English policing and UFA perspective the security out here has worked well that there are concerns obviously with that incident that’s happened in Hamburg not got an awful lot of detail on that yet we’ll hear more from the German authorities later but the England fans will head in huge numbers towards gzen kirken later on today for that big opening game against Serbia 8:00 kickoff so far so good [Music]
