What is England’s best Midfield? Ft. Gary Neville, Roy Keane & Ian Wright | ITV Sport

well Gary’s pretty much said it there hasn’t he Trent Alexander Arnold alongside Dean rice in a sort of double pivot what would you make of that because we all know what the questions are is defensive awareness yeah I mean there is a bit of that but I think against Serbia are going to play deep and we’re going to need to be fair to find a way to cut them open I can see why Trent Works in this particular match as it as the tournament moves on I I don’t think it will remain that way I think other players will come into the fold the clamor for this Midfield of rice folded and Bellingham I don’t think Gareth is going to sort of um give us that because of the defense and what what Trent playing there does is allow basically Kyle Walker to stay back almost as a third Center back which he’s done for City for a lot of the Season allows Trent to go in there on that right side and deliver as almost like a right back and then come back into defense so I can see why it works but I’m not sure it’ll be the solution as the see as the actual tournament moves on is the reality that to get the best out of rice Bellingham and foden and have the defensive stability might be asking too much in other words one of those players may not be in his preferred position possibly so but obviously G it’s all about getting the balance right in your team they’ve got some brilliant individuals we’ve mentioned that many times before and players four or five players who walk into any of the teams in this tournament was getting that balance right and I agree you talk about that this defensive side of it they have players who can go win your football matches but it’s the problem defending against the really better teams I think they’ll be fine in the group I think they’ be Trent will be fine in the uh his position in them matches but against the real top teams I think he’ll be found out very much so if I I think he’d be ripped to shreds if he plays against one of the better teams in the Center Midfield I don’t think he’ be up to it well guy thinks you don’t think that would happen because he wouldn’t play there I think I think Gallagher will come in I think in certain games and to be fair this idea of foden going out to the left wing this is not Paul skols being shoved out on the left wing you know fen’s played there before he’s used to that position so it’s not like it’s something that’s really weird yeah but if he does well in there and they get momentum in the group then you’re talking your argument you don’t want to make too many changes so that’s that’s the problem have they um had any complacency knocked out by what happened against Iceland the other night you think in a way that’s not necessarily such a bad thing I don’t think so I think that it’s it’s it kind of a excuse me it’s a it’s a kick up the backside almost like right let’s get our minds right for for what’s coming you see what we got eight players who are playing in it who played in the in the in the in the world cup so you’re talking about a team that’s experienced enough and Gareth now is in a place where if I need to play Trent at this stage to get it done to get the creation creation going what we’re going to need at this then then you do it you do what you need to do to get to the next stage of it and that’s what this these teams this team knows and what they should be trying to do getting to the next bit next uh phase but he’s got bigger problems you you on about just Trend situation people trip here and these boys are starting they’ve had really difficult Spells at their Club some of these players aren’t coming into the tournament with great confidence defensively I’m talking about yeah I think we said Iceland in front of Gary and got away with it didn’t we that his F I know seems like Gary’s in and around Iceland something’s going to add him to us Center back it picks itself doesn’t it gay along with Jon Stones yeah and that is a massive opportunity for gay I think he’s an exciting young player but when you think about sort of winning a tournament look unless this tournament’s going to throw up something that previous tournaments haven’t defensively you need to be strong to go the whole way and that is the massive worry of anybody I was hearing sort of you know last night Roy talking about it and even referring to it everyone is referring to England’s defense and I’m struggling in my mind at this moment in time to see unless Gareth somehow finds a way to compensate for them how we go the whole way with that back for unless they play the game of their lives every single week I’m struggling to understand how it can happen

With a whole host of talent in the middle of the park for England this #EURO2024 the ITV Sport pundits have their go at selecting who they think is England’s Best Midfield.

  1. As we have a problem at left-back, the answer is to play a back three, with a box of four centrally, and you can still have three forwards. It's a five and five. Five offensive players and five defensive. 3-2-2-3. Here's how it looks: Pickford, Walker, Stones, Guehi, Rice, Mainoo, Bellingham, Foden, Palmer, Kane, Saka. That five in attack have over 140 goals between them this season. That team can win the euros. Not sure we have a manager brave enough to play it.

  2. So disrespectful to Trent to say it would fall apart with him in there against a top team. He’s played against Ronaldo, Messi, Mbappe.. he’s a world class player and if you want to do well you put him in and let him dominate the game on the ball. He does it in the premier league against top teams

  3. It's so interesting to see all these pundits talking about a right back defender who play at the highest club level and have won everything.
He is a defender but now he cannot even play in the midfield with an entire backline behind him because he cannot defend ?
So even midfield players defend much better than him now.
I have one question to these pundits, what have England ever won ?
And since that is is nothing, why not change it up and go with our best players to get a 2-0 lead or something and then take off all the guys that cannot defend after that !!

  4. I think we underestimate our quality … we have real stars in our team … we are QUALITY … we’ll shock ourselves this tournament!!

  5. Honestly, the amount of shit Trent gets when he has defended really well against some of the best players in the world. It's honestly embarassing at this point.

  6. Should be Wharton alongside Rice and Bellingham. If Foden plays it should only be on the right so he can cut onto his left to shoot or make intricate passes. Or he should play as the 10. He definitely shouldn't be playing on the left where he can't cut inside onto his left foot as he isn't quick enough to be going on the outside and whipping balls into the box. Gordon or Eze should be playing on the left as otherwise the balance of the team isn't right.

  7. So basically an England squad that never won anything, and they are blaming Trent even before the first game. Thought English pundits have a brain somewhere

  8. Poor commentary. Feeding into the media's opinion on Trent. Trent has been playing at the top level for years. His performance against Barcelona in the semi-finals of the Champions League is one of the best performances from a right back in the last few years. The English media worry about his defensive capabilities. Unleash this man and he will win you the tournament. No other player in world football can pass the ball like Trent.
