The Dutch lost the semifinal against Czechoslovakia in 1976 because of horrible refereeing by Clive Thomas. A ref who treated the Dutch players like dogs and entered the Dutch dressingroom before the match and warned them that he wouldn’t allow play like at the WC in 1974. A ref who ignored a brutal foul on Johan Cruijff which led to a Czech counterattack and the 2-1 in extra time. I am still angry after 48 years despite Clive’s apology. Basically, if you beat croatia, you have a 50% chance of winning the euros or the world cup, look it up.

France's flop in 2020 was the strangest one. It had a squad with superior disposal and somehow lost their campaign.
Oranje in the late 1950's was hardy powerhouse.
Back in Uni, a classmate said “do you imagine? Eder being the one who gives Portugal a trophy? ahahah no way, impossible”, this was a month before the euros.
Being called favourites in 2024 is very different than in the 1960's & 70's. Theres only 4 teams in the actual tournament so youve a 75% of getting on the podium

Why are England favourites?
We have a world class striker (who also has a world class trophy curse). We have one of the best right wings in the world. We have one of the best DM's in the world. And we have about 500 amazing 10's.
Like seriously, people seem to think we are an amazing team because we have 750 really good 10's, but you can only play one 10 (maybe 2 at a push in the right system).
We literally have an amazing player in 4 out of 11 positions. Thats nowhere near enough.
Yes, Stones is quality and so is Shaw. But gran has played more football then the pair of them combined in the last year, and shes been dead for 20 years. Walker has been on a hard decline for the last year. There are some talented players, but Mainoo has barely played a professional game for each year his been alive, Wharton is the same. Eze and Gordon are solid on the left, and could be fantastic, but its all if buts and maybes and neither has proved anything yet.
International football is all about the defence and WE HAVE NO DEFENCE. And its barely an injury crisis imo at this point, Stones has barely been fit the last two years at least, Luke Shaw has been injured so much for so long that I think Mainoo probably has more total United appearance then him now.
England is a bang average team at best, with a few absolute stars, most of who all want to play in the same part of the pitch and therefore don't work well together.
