How Alex Telles Will Fit into Solskjaer’s Manchester United | Starting XI, Formation & Tactics

Manchester United have completed the transfer of Brazilian left-back Alex Telles on deadline day. In today’s video we’ll be looking at where Telles will fit into Solskjaer’s Manchester United.

After much deliberation, Manchester United have finally got a new left back, signing Alex Telles for around 15 million euros plus add ons, with the Brazillian international signing a 4 year contract at the club, with an option for a fifth.

Telles has wonderful technique which allows him to be very effective in the final third.
Not just from open play but from dead ball situations too. From these positions he’s got a wicked delivery which sees him put great shape and whip on his deliveries, often resulting in a shot on goal. And as you can imagine, he can deliver from open play too. Often he takes up a very wide position in the final third, where he’s got the most time and space to receive and then decide on his delivery.

Whilst his technique allows him to send in pretty much every type of delivery.
I’m talking, floated, curved crosses to more driven, low deliveries.
Regardless of the cross, his accuracy is always on the money which means he offers a genuine threat from wide areas. And this is what he’ll bring to Manchester United, real attacking quality from left back. In fact Telles registered more league assists last season, than Luke Shaw and Brandon Williams have combined in their entire Manchester United careers.

Alex Telles could allow Rashford to revert back to his inside forward role from the inverted winger role he has taken up since Greenwood entered the first team. This could allow United to play with a striker and two inside forwards mirroring the best teams in Europe.
Before his injury in January, Rashford was an inside forward with Dan James holding the width on the right and was flying scoring 0.7 goals per 90. However, since his injury and the emergence of Mason Greenwood on the right, Rashford was pushed wide to accommodate the youngster and his goal scoring returns halved, with him scoring 0.35 goals per 90.
But with Telles holding the width, Rashford should be free to return to that inside forward role that saw him thrive.

This link up will cause one of two situations.
Either the opposing full back will mark Telles, creating space for Rashford to operate in.
Or the full back will go with Rashford, creating massive space for Telles to receive, identify his delivery and send the ball in for the forwards.
The only way to counter this is for the opposition to bring a defender from elsewhere. If the right winger drops back, it’ll reduce the opposition’s counter attacking threat.
Whilst if a central or defensive midfielder drops in, it’ll create space centrally for Bruno Fernandes to operate in.
