  1. Could someone explain to me the difference between a 4-3-2-1 and a 4-3-3? In a 4-3-3 the center forward is the lone striker. In soccer there are 3 strategic positional roles: defense, midfield and forwards. So why do pundits keep trying to make it 4? Josh I would like to see Ahmed instead of Choiniere and Laryea instead of Johnston. I'm also not so sure about Crepeau. Far too short to be a world class keeper, and THAT is what Canada will need to make any waves in 2026. Europeans and African nations are full of very tall and strong players and Canada is going to get eaten alive on corners with a short keeper like Crepeau. I also suspect that Marsch will play Davies as a winger who interchanges with David and is thus on the ball more often.

  2. From Marsch's comments on the CBS Sports Golazo podcast, I think Miller will get the nod over Cornelius. Marsch mentioned a bunch of names for central CBs and he didn't even mention Cornelius. Could've been a slip but he said Miller was "a guy I think we can count on". On left wing, I get that Millar is a workhorse that brings 110%, but he doesn't have the same technical skill to cause problems on the ball that Ahmed would bring, and Ahmed will fit the pressing requirements just fine. If we're pushing Davies back (which I agree with), then for me it's gotta be Ahmed up front. Finally, I'd prefer to see Eustaquio and Piette beside each other – especially against Argentina. I liked how Piette looked up against Messi in the Monreal/Miami matchup. Though maybe Johnston slots in beside Eustaquio if Laryea is ready and able to take right back. Kone up in a 10 is exciting. I could really see him breaking out in a big way this tourney – a goal from outside the box, maybe. We'll certainly need to threaten from outside the box against capable defensive blocks. Can't wait for the friendlies!! May the best men get the spot. Everyone's gotta bring it.

  3. The Salzburg system tells on high press and speed. My concern is that national team players come from various systems. Soft tissue injuries become a problem in this scenario. When players show up for short stints with the national program. Hopefully he adapts his system to prevent these types of injuries.

  4. Great analysis although I am not sold on the set up. Partic Johnston, Miller and the actual structure but I look forward to the future. I think Marsch is a good fit and we can do good things together.

  5. Jesse tends to like to play compact and when defending, he likes to push everything wide. It's hard to move it up the middle on a Jesse team but it's weakness is the long switch passes. I don't know if he's fixed that yet, but at Leeds big switches caused them all sorts of problems. The good thing about it is it just creates turnovers all over the place lol.

  6. Hope and don’t think this will be the lineup, I’m not sure even why we’re talking about Piette who is an average MLS player at best talking about going up against major world talents… Osario can play any position better.
2nd-We have seen at Bayern Munich that Davies is a defensive liability at wingback is a true wing. There are other options in Laryea or Adekugbe at wingback.
3rd-let’s not get carried away with club performance as statistically we know that David is not the reliable goalscorer at the nine position on the national team and is better at a false nine with Larin at the top in the proper nine…they are better to play together.
4th-let’s cap Kolyosho and Farsi as they would be better options at the positions they play… this is why we have Kevin Blue and Jessie Marsch for the purposes of high-level recruiting… on that note, let’s cap Jebbison as well.

  7. I’m not going to lie.. I think Marsch is the perfect fit for Canada with his style. Canada is going to be pretty scary to play against. I’m dreading having the weaker coach in Berhalter playing against Canada.

  8. In a podcast he was just on he implied he wanted Davies to come into the middle more and be more involved in the play. From that, I'm guessing he's not going to be at LB, and I wouldn't be surprised to see inverted wingers. Buchanan and Millar already play that role at club level so that would make sense for them too. Buchanan/Millar on the left, Davies on the right.

  9. I still think I prefer a 3-5-2 over 4-2-3-1. I think Davies as an attacking wing back suits him much better than just being a straight LB. Also, having 2 ar the top allows Larin to slot in next to David. He hasn't been particularly good with Mallorca this year, but when he lines up for Canada he always delivers. Larin deserves to be in the starting XI.

  10. Good team, but I've been very impressed with Jacob Shaffleburg in national colors, I'd try him in the LW role as a starter

  11. Solid lineup but I just don’t see how not having Larin in the starting 11 is ever better. We probably would’ve scored in that 1st half vs Belgium if we had another potent finisher up there. I’d go with a 4-3-1-2. Choiniere out, David and Larin up front. Everyone else the same as yours.

  12. I doubt that Marsch will have Davies that far back. I heard him talking about Davies & saying that he can move him around; but that he doesn't just want him playing out wide as a winger; but rather have him cutting into the middle more etc… and taking advantage of his tremendous speed.
If Marsch wants to play a very speedy press game, to keep the opposition on their heels, it makes more sense to try Davies further up the pitch to start & adjust as needed.

I also heard Marsch complimenting Kamal Miller's game, so I would be surprised if he didn't start, at least in the initial match versus the Netherlands. He will want to have a little more experience in the initial starting line-up too.
