Speak to most people who have followed Man United over the last few years, and you can expect to hear similar things – that the club has deep-rooted structural problems which have developed since the Glazers took over in 2005, and that these problems have made it almost impossible for managers to succeed to the level expected at Old Trafford, despite the eye-watering sums that have been spent in the years since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.
But over the last year, and particularly in the last few months, club captain Harry Maguire has taken an increasing amount of the blame for United’s poor form on the pitch. He was most recently booed by fans each time he touched the ball in United’s pre-season friendly against Crystal Palace in Australia, and it of course isn’t the first time that supporters have loudly made their displeasure known.
Back in March, news of him being substituted off in the dying embers of a Champions League knock-out defeat to Atletico Madrid was greeted with a chorus of aggressive cheers at Old Trafford, a stadium where such behaviour is traditionally frowned upon. And it’s not just followers of United – two weeks later, he was roundly booed by England fans at Wembley.
But what has led to the centre-back becoming such a figure of hate among fans? And beyond the flat-out abuse, is the level of criticism he receives justified? On today’s FD Explained, we’re going to take a look.

Yes
nah you just buthurt that Maguire is not fit for a big club. ETH played him in the 1st 2 games of this season and Utd were abysmal in defense. 4 games later and they are a on a four game win streak. Took long to fix the defense.
Short answer: yes, for United not for England
Long answer: a 10 minute version of the short answer
Let him play at his best possition. The bench
maguire really need to cover up lack of speed by positioning good and decision making
the moment he did his plug ears celebration, he lost my support forever.
When you can’t fix a fridge, don’t fix it, destroy it
Maguire is rubbish
Yes
absolutely true, is a fact…
Bro he came on against Arsenal in the dying minutes and got a Yellow Card within 5 mins of coming on.
Be real. Hes a championship defender at best
yes he that bad, dont bother watching the video
all he has going for him is his size he litterally has nothing else goiing for him.
hes an absolute doughnut
Yes, he is. Glazers out
we just shouldnt play him, its nto fit for the prem tbh
YES he is
With the amount of money that utd paid to bring him in, yes he is bad.
Whos buyin these players eh
Yes. yes he is.
Wait "police have taken action against mean messages on the internet"….? You can get arrested for mean messages on the internet in Britain? WTF?
Waaay too apologetic a take for my liking. Abuse aside, professionals deserve criticism.
for a player who lacks pace you'd think he'd master his positioning , but no , abysmal by all metrics. I think his best bet would be to start him along Martinez
What angers the fans the most is the amount off protection this fridge gets…. Almost every outside fans are sugar talking this fool…
People saying that it’s so hard to get into a soccer team, yet I’m seeing this guy in a team with Ronaldo –
He's straight trash and I'm an arsenal fan. He makes Mustafi look like Maldini
He's pretty good to be fair.
10 minutes? I'd have been happy with just you saying yes for 10 minutes. He is that bad.
I don’t understand, if he’s that bad. Why he’s still playing for england and captain Manchester United?
MAGUIRE OUT
I feel like his managers are putting him at risk, he is clearly not playing well and they insist on playing him, some could look at it as an attempt to let him get better, but it is now looking like they are putting him on the spotlight for people to see how bad he is. There are some crazy fans in football and a failed penalty in the World Cup or a self goal in the second round could make people go neanderthal agaisnt him
How did he make it all the way to the PL?
He’s probably playing very poorly because he knows no one is supporting him and booing him… deplorable
Southgate insists on playing the 4th choice United centre back. This will end badly. Allowing a mediocre Iran attack to run past him when we are 5-0 up doesn't attract attention. Meeting a decent team where one goal will finish the match could result in him being victimised.
Yes.
