  1. The problem with Steffen is that he has become so untrustworthy. He has had too many gaffers in the last several months. You just canโ€™t have even one or it can quickly knock you out of the tournament.

  2. Agree with this decision 100%. Steffen has not been the best for a while now. I donโ€™t even think heโ€™s better than Johnson let alone Turner.

  3. I think initially Beerholder picked Steffen though just as a sub for Johnson. So as a third stringer, he was not going to see any playing time which would have passed him off so leaving him was the only choice

  4. Itโ€™s not shocking. Horvath has been in better form in the same league on a worse team.

What exactly has Zach done to earn his spot on the roster let alone be the no1?

    People are sleeping on Horvath

  5. That bit from Alexi about players wanting to win and being able to tune out a lot of stuff and compartmentalize sounds a lot like a shot at Steve Sampson.

  6. Steffen had been the starter because he fit the way Gregg wanted to play, by passing it out of the back. This is Gregg admitting we can't play that way in the World Cup. I can see Gregg throwing everything out and playing a bunker countering style in Qatar.

  7. Sorry, Lalas, but you are wrong. Players, at least some American players, do not want to play, they want a huge paycheck instead of developing into proper professionals and learning their trade.
I called it when Steffen signed for Manchester City where he was rarely going to have playtime. When soon after signing he was relegated to being the third-choice GK, whenever Pepe was reminded by his staff that Steffen existed, he insisted on staying as a bench warmer, and only looked for game time when the World Cup was around the corner, and, it was evident to all, that his game had digressed.
I contrast that with Tim Howard who had no issues finding his level, choosing to evolve by forcing a move to Everton, and eventually becoming one of the best GKs ever.
Unfortunately, what Zack has opted for is currently the issue with most USMNT players, especially Pulisic. Various top managers in world football can't all be wrong, yet Pulisic is perfectly comfortable being a benchwarmer for a team he should have joined after constant development and game time at smaller teams.

  8. I don't fault the decision per se…what I am upset at is the inconsistency in how these decisions are made. Steffen being on the outs for form is fine but then why say things like – oh this guy plays in the EPL and Championship so he has seen who we'll be playing from England/Wales – that alone shoulda made Zach a part of this roster if only for the insight on specific players

  9. Berhalter is just a glorified sock puppet of US Soccer. They're the ones that made the decision to drop him and they will regret it dearly when they play these three games at the end of the month.

  10. Its not realistic to think that the US team will win their match against the Netherlands , if the US team will become second in there group stage, Greg Berhalter will agree with that. The people in US who analyst soccer in US , should know the US team is a young team wiht good players who play in Europe, but overall the US team have not enough experience to play at those level at a world cup, young players who play in the mls need this experience in this world cup, for their development and to make progress, and look forward to the next world cup, in 2026 this world cup comes to early for the US team. But every team needs luck and there always a chance, but stay realistic, everything can happen in sports, but is not wrong to be realistic.when the ladies team of US playing the world cup, than u can say they will win the world cup that is realistic, but maybe the male soccer organization in US have learn from the ladies how the ladies do it. U never know,in sports the underdog can win

  11. It's simple; the us would not be at the WC without him in qualifying. To exclude him, is bad leadership. Looking for club form excuses on a healthy goalkeeper looks petty especially when he was a vital part of the team battling in qualifying. Gregg Berhalter is a joke.
