Don Hutchison and Steve Nicol join ESPN FC’s Dan Thomas to weigh up whether Liverpool should try to buy RB Leipzig and Germany striker Timo Werner or Napoli and Senegal center back Kalidou Koulibaly, if the club can only sign one next season. Hutchison thinks with Koulibaly partnering Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool’s defense would be nigh on impossible for attackers to beat. Nicol argues that Werner would add rotation to Liverpool’s front three of Sadio Mané, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino that will be desperately needed in the coming seasons.

If it boils down to which player I would rather have for one season, I'd take Koulibaly. But long-term, the front line is getting older and a little stale. Werner is younger and cheaper allowing for more flexibility going forward.

Koulibaly improves the starting 11 and the squad. Werner only improves the squad. No brainer if we could only get one of the two. Surely we could get both, napoli in need of cash!

Gomez is doing well and going places. He should be left to develop.
Timo is a better option. The front three are showing signs of fatigue and sometimes lack of creativity. There is also no world-class option for them.

These men have no sense, Koulibaly wouldn’t be worth it, he’s priced at £80m and is turning 29 this year, Joe Gomez has shown his class and is only 22, Werner joining would change the formation to a 4-2-3-1 playing firmino in the CAM with Werner up front

Werner all day I wouldn't sign a 28 year old cb only proven in Italy for €100 no chance no sell on fee and we have more than capable backup cb besides lovren… So sign Werner scrap kouilbaly… By the way I'm not saying kouilbaly is a bad cb coz he ain't he is solid but not at 28 and at 100m just my opinion

Werner completely fits into the Liverpool system and has the ability to play as an out and out striker, a false 9 and on the left wing.
Wait… koulibaily is from Senegal…. doesn’t that mean he’ll be gone during the Afcon if we do get him just like Sadio and Mo. I think that we should go for Werner instead because we can still have a solid backline with Virgil and Gomez. We would just need a player that can keep us at the same level if not better when our 2 attacking players leave for Afcon. Just my $0.02.

Think Werner fixes a bigger issue that the squad has because the front 3 is too hot and cold, particularly Salah. They definitely need a fresh face/another good player who maybe doesn't have as high a ceiling but is more consistent and that describers Werner to a T. While Koulibaly is great, defensive mid is one of the clubs strongest spots with Gomez next to Van Dijk unless Klopp is ready to move to a defensive 3 formation but no idea if that's the case and that's no small task. Similarly important is for Liverpool to sign another attacking gifted player in the middle that also isn't a defensive liability which is why they're also reportedly trying to get Todd Cantwell.
