Finally, mercifully, the Steven Gerrard era came to an unsurprising conclusion in West London, as Aston Villa turned in their worst performance of the season, and were thoroughly and comprehensively beaten. The smoke that had been swirling for a while, finally led to the fire, as Villa’s beleaguered manager was dismissed almost before the final whistle sounded. Pete the Canadian Villa fanatic looks back at the warning signs, the key issues that Gerrard will need to reflect on, including the man management issues surrounding Tyrone Mings, but also the complete dependence on his assistant Michael Beale. It’s not the show we want to do, but it’s the one that’s been coming for a long time.

  1. We all knew the waiting was on the wall, yes Gerrard made mistakes, but a lot of these players got Deano sacked too. To me Mings, Konsa, Mcginn all look stale & need to go. Purslow, Lange need to go too.

  2. Personally I think we're f**ked , Poch ain't coming he's turned us down according to rumours , and the bookies always know gone to 7-1 now …I can see us going for a relegation specialist 😟 Dyche or Bruce or some other big Sam type …very worrying times …Petes jacket is nice though …utv vtwd and most importantly….. sotc 💩on the 🏙

  3. I don't know if you saw it last night, Pete, but if you can stomach watching it again, take a look at the times we had free kicks. I couldn't believe Baily and Luiz were looking toward the bench for instruction. It's like they were scared to use their own minds in case of repercussions (probably from Austin MacPhee)
I totally agree on the Mings issue you raise. They were on a high after their pre-season tour. Everything seemed to be in place…then came the demotion of Mings, after which things turned sour quickly.
    Another great show, as always.

  4. my betting dollar says the next guy doesn't last as long as Gerrard. incoming manager number 10 since MON left. a losing formula in any sport. Villa 0 – Brentford 4 on Sunday. we won't win a game before the WC break. relegation pretty much certain.

  5. A really well balanced review as always. Excellent show, always look forward to watching. Think everyone to show there appreciation should have a whip round to get you over to VP 😊

  6. Great video as always. The best Villa videos out there!

SG never worked out his best XI and he couldn’t because of his loyalty to underperforming players like McGinn and Phil. His game management was even worse. There’s a lot of rebuilding ahead…

  7. Gerrard should be given more time…what is 12 mths?….. the fan dreams too big too fast…..a World class Coach won't be willing to come to Villa either with this attitude of players…his best new players are all injured as well….what's the fan comment of the players rather than Gerrard….

  8. They have sacked five of them including Critchley. Franks interim Manager. I'm a Brit living in USA NC stumbled on this Pod as a link. Great Video mate. I actually think the players played last night to get him fired. Mcguinn is a joker in the Dressing room however I agree he is not a Captain. Purslow must go. so must be Lange. VTID1941

  9. Fantastic analysis as always, and I agree that the club needs a total clear out. The strategy is not working, so it needs to be changed.
Purslow could be gone in the coming days. I certainly noticed that the club released the statement about Stevie G's sacking, and not Purslow, which is a big change to these types of announcements at Villa over the last couple of years. No spin here, no trying to polish what was happening (as they did when Jack left), just the straight dope! 😉
Best Villa Pod out there, I always look for your comments first. Thanks Pete!

  10. Not a villa fan but love this channel. Although poch is a long shot definitely get him if possible. If not I think villa needs stability and cohesion which is why i think Thomas frank should be 2nd in line.

  11. Just discovered Pete the Canadian & The Holy Trinity Show, so pleased to have done so. I`m not a Villa fan but I shall watch Pete from now on for his insightful viewpoints on the beautiful game and his clearly spoken intelligent comments. Bravo Pete, excellent work, the best football presentation on YouTube.

  12. Sir, greetings from Pakistan. You were spot on. Focus must be the root cause. Being a Villa die hard fan for over 40 years now, it just breaks my heart to witness how good players are transformed into one mediocre unit by poor man management skills. The management needs to act fast and correctly this time around. I am hopeful that we will back on the road to success soon. Wishing the best for your high quality channel. I love it.
    Warm regards

  13. Leaving the channel. There are to much shit within PL to be a part of it, in any aspect. Gerrad shouldnt be sacked, the leadership above him should. Let Villa sink! Sink down into League 2!!

  14. I have to agree with every word you said,,i was saying the same on the last game, I'm not a expert on football, I have only been watching the villa since 1969,, but so much is not right,no team is the same from week to week, we do not know how to play as a team, but rome was not built in a week,,,so with hope its going to get better

  15. I totally agree about Purslow, he should be giving a statement about the mistakes he made, you are right his ego won't do that. It is quite surprising how quickly a club can go toxic, as much as it pains me to say on reflection Bruce steadied the club and we then did the right thing by letting go when that had run the course and getting Smith to build was perfection. May we take great lessons from this shambles and the team move forward on Sunday, that will tell us everything if we get those points on Sunday.

  16. 3 points against Brentford is vital and totally within our reach with the other games coming up. In saying that, if we can contain City we can beat Utd. Keep up the good work Pete!
    Up The Villa!!!!

  17. It seems that the media are turning on Villa fans for the sacking of the golden boy Stephen Gerrard & they seem to think that we demand too much. I am sick to death with this lazy narrative & it would be nice if they took the time to understand why we expect & want the best for our club. When Gerrard came to Villa I did have my reservation but accepted him as someone who knows what it’s like to be in a winning dressing room and would push the standards of the club up. Unfortunately despite getting everything that he wanted (and not many managers can say that) and a full pre-season which he always said he wanted he got the sack leaving us only on goal difference above the relegation zone with the 2nd lowest number of goals scored and playing side to side football. Yes he was very unlucky with key players getting injured but we have a number of players he signed he would not play. His tactics have cost us games and on a number of occasions any sort of game plan went out of the window when we end up chasing the game when he throws on 4 strikes. What fan base who watches this week in week out would find this acceptable? With regards to respect show or I should say lack of respect show to Aston Villa from the media they need to understand one thing. We as Villa don’t expect to win everything but we want to see our team being competitive. Like any club we have face ups and downs but we have always taken those difficult times in our stride. Some of the great times of Aston Villa were in the early 70s when we were in the 3rd division smashing attendance records around the country and at Villa Park. Despite last winning the FA Cup back in 57 we held that record of 7 win up until the 80s. Yes we sing of winning the European Cup back in 82 but one thing that they don’t want to mention is we did that while being champions of our league and not by finishing 2nd 3rd or 4th. Only Everton has played more seasons than us in top flight football and this is something to be proud of.
    EVERTON 120 seasons
    Aston Villa 109
    Liverpool 108
    Arsenal 106
    Man Utd 98

You will see Arsenal have a proud record of 106 but look up the history of how they bribed there way sorry paid there way to gaining promotion over Spurs which began the animosity between the two clubs.

While We celebrate our past we do not live there but I will not forget our history because this is what makes us who we are today. We expect the best from our players and management team and will should never be ashamed of that. Yes we have to realistic but ambition to be better should not be compromised even when we face difficult time like we face now.
For those who think Gerrard was hard done by then ask him “do you think it’s acceptable for Villa to be in the situation they are in now from a man with his standing and reputation in the game”?

To all Villa fans, always stand proud and strong in hope that we will see the team we want. Up The Fucking VILLA

  18. There’s a few people saying he should have had more time. A lot made of the Mings/McGinn captaincy. Players injured. Etc etc.

What nobody is talking about is the absolutely dreadful football we’ve endured this calendar year (barring a 3 game run last season). Our football is slow, boring, pedestrian and predictable. It’s SO easy to play against. Second to that, you can have bad runs of form or not be at it every game but the minimum is to give 100% effort. So many players absolutely stealing a living at the moment. I really hoped Gerrard would set and demand high standards because this has been a thing for years at Villa. But so many are so casual. Mings trying to look good and swaggers around. Watkins sees a teammate score and looks genuinely pissed off about it. There’s big big problems at Villa.

The social media team put up snippets of someone scoring in training against no defenders after a cross has come in with no defender again trying to stop it. This is top level elite football training and coaching?!

We’ve got all these players at the club now who are on big wages and have cost big money but have no current sell on value. And unless the poor sod who goes in next can get them to be the professionals they are supposed to be, we will be in financial disarray again before we know it – regardless of how wealthy the owners are. Enough talking players and club hierarchy, time for action.

  19. Stevie's big name pulling power was somewhat worth it though if you ignore the results on the field. Hopefully the players we have are enough to bring in consistent talent. Who are we betting on becoming new Villa manager?

  20. Absolutely spot on! I agree with everything you have said but above all your comments regarding Purslow. The guy is so egotistical it's unreal, he reminds me of Gary Cook the former CEO at Man City when the Arabs took over. It was all about him "This is the Gary Cook show" I've disliked Purslow ever since Dean Smith was appointed and they gave "that interview" where he was basically saying the same thing as Cook "This is the Christian Purslow show" He HAS to be made accountable ASAP. I think Deano fell victim to Purslow who was jealous of Smith's popularity with the fans, Smith galvanised the club and when he went you could sense the feel good factor following him through the door. We have the best owners the club has ever had and i feel sure they will see through this guy and move on, at least i hope so.
