Australia’s Steven Bradbury achieves an unexpected gold medal in the short tack speed skating event, taking advantage of a mistake causing his fellow finalists to fall at the Salt Lake City 2002 Winter Olympic Games.

Coming into the five-man final, Steven Bradbury was the rank outsider and as the race progressed his chances looked slimmer with each passing lap. But as the leading quartet rounded the final bend, Lia Jiajun (CHN) tried an over-ambitious overtaking manoeuvre outside Apollo Ohno (USA), sending them both onto the ice and bringing down Mathieu Turcotte (CAN) and Ahn Hyun-soo (KOR) in the process. This left the way clear for a nonplussed Bradbury to cross the line unchallenged and claim the most unexpected of gold medals.

  1. “I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.” – Ecclesiastes 9:11

  2. just about the nicest bloke ever & have actually met him too- well deserved albeit just a little bit unconventional- Steven Bradbury is part of our Australian folklore now…..

  3. Bradbury is atill winning awards, in 2023 he won an award for brave conduct for his actions during the rescue of four teenagers from rough seas in Caloundra, Queensland on 5 March 2022.

  4. In my top three of Australian Olympic moments I've actually seen live, the other two being Cathy Freeman's gold in the 400m, and the "guitar smash" mens 4×100 freestyle relay.

  5. If you think in Nascar a 3rd to 1st place on a last lap is insane B** HOW ABOUT A LAST TO 1ST IN A SALT LAKE 2002 WINTER OLYMPICS
WERE STEVEN WON LAST TO 1ST AND WINNING A GOLDEN MEDAL 2:02

  8. If you had no idea how he would came up final, the semi-final had the same thing happen and he got 2nd, but after the Japanese competitor got disqualified, he luckily got the first. His coach suggested him to use the same strategy, looking for the crash of the first lines to hit the trophy as it was the only way, or, the most possible way. And, it happened, what a strategy!

  9. Very aggressive skaters and there was a real likelihood of a fall. Steve said before the race he expected someone to fall… later he said that he never expect all of them to fall! The pack was not going fast, that can be seen by the overtaking that was going on, they were jockeying for best position and when they felt the were going down… they took out the person nearest to them in the hope they would recover quicker. Steve was behind ten meters on purpose!

  10. 2分35秒可以看到在決賽最後一圈,中國李佳軍出手拉美國選手腰部,害美國、加拿大、韓國選手摔倒,李佳軍被取消比賽資格,維基百科有寫。

  11. At least one of the other players was deliberately interfering with the racer next to him who was trying to pass him. Look at the scraggling before. He stays at the last position from the get go. His intention was always to try at the end. He had nothing to do with the crash. He’s a legend and a win well deserved. Karma does exist.

  12. Chinese guy tripped himself, USA guy reached out and tripped the Korean guy who in turn pulled him down with him. Canadian guy was just in an unfortunate place. Bradbury was in the perfect place to win, and as an American I’m so happy he won

  13. Two words
    Steven Bradbury..
Hands down, the only thing I knew about speed skating before seeing this😂 this is premeditated brilliance. Check out Steve though if you haven’t seen him at Salt Lake City 2002
    Ozzie Ozzie
    Ozzie……..

  14. The dudes still in the 99th percentile of skaters to even be in the Olympics.. hes just not in the 99.99% to win it all and this is just him getting lucky and hey he bought his ticket to the race and thats what happens sometimes

  15. Being the last all the run and getting the first place few seconds before the end, it reminds me mario kart 😂
    Congrats Mr.Bradbury it's well deserved ! 👏
