Manchester United has reached agreement with Portuguese club Vitoria de Guimaraes for the purchase of 20-year-old forward BEBE (full name Tiago Manuel Dias Correia). According to the official web site of Vitoria Sport Clube de Guimaraes [ www.vitoriasc.pt ], Bebe is a flexible, all round forward who plays preferentially in the wide positions (right or left) but can also play as the central striker. Bebe is a Portugal under-19 International.

The 6ft 2in attacker is a virtual unknown and only signed a five-year deal with Vitoria de Guimaraes seven weeks ago on June 24 2010, but it was during the pre-season that scouts really began to take notice. Five goals in 14 pre-season games and a string of man-of-the-match displays marked down the all-rounder as one to watch. Bebe made his Vitoria debut on June 26 in their first pre-season friendly against Maritimo, coming on in the second half for 45 minutes of a 0-0 draw. On July 2, he played his second match for Vitoria with the first 45 minutes against the same opponents in a 2-0 defeat.

He played his next match on July 10 against Freamunde, again for 45 minutes in a 2-0 win. On July 14 he played another 45 minutes against the same opponents, and scored the opening goal in a 5-0 win using his strength to shrug off a defender before scoring. He also played a half in each of a 4-2 win against Groningen and a 5-3 defeat against Benfica (both in the City of Guimaraes Trophy), a 0-0 draw with Aves, and a 1-1 draw with newly promoted Beira-Mar in which he scored a superb second half equalizer.

He then starred, without scoring, in a 2-0 win against Oliveirense before netting in a standout performance in a 2-2 draw with Varzim. He rounded out the month with an hour – but no goals – in a 1-1 draw against Rio Ave. Bebe sealed his United move by impressing in a 1-0 friendly defeat against Paços de Ferreira, scoring the first in a 4-0 win against Bragança which was described as “an excellent individual goal,” and again scoring the opener in a 2-2 draw against Tirsense. He ended his Vitoria career with five goals in 14 pre-season games and was widely reckoned to be the side’s best player.

According to Portuguese daily A Bola, Bebe has been so impressive that Real Madrid were also chasing him. However, based entirely on the recommendation of Manchester United scouts as well as former United assistant manager and current Portugal boss Carlos Queiroz, Sir Alex Ferguson is bringing Bebe to Old Trafford. The Guardian reports that Manchester United will pay £7.4million (€9m euros) for Bebe, his buy-out clause, although the Club’s web site says that the fee is undisclosed and that the transfer is subject to a medical later this week. Bebe will sign a five-year deal at Old Trafford.

The official web site of Manchester United [ www.manutd.com ] confirms that the deal for Bebe is now “done and dusted” with the medical and paperwork all completed. Bebe will officially be unveiled with fellow new signings Chris Smalling and Javier Hernandez, at a press conference to be held tomorrow (Tuesday, 17 August 2010) at 2 PM BST.

  1. Check out the article about him on goal.com
Forget about his performance in the first season. He needs a lot of work but hey, this lad has a positive attitude, so who knows what will happen in the future. Best of luck Bebe, hope to see you back at United.

  2. from what i c he looks quite promising, i think we jst need to give em a bit of time to adapt to the english way of football , dont forget hes only 20 .

  3. i think apart from being portugese, bebe is actually english
    1) he cant cross well
    2) POWER POWER POWER
    3) he cost as much as an english player with the same standard

  4. all u guys who are judging bebe on 6 apperances are just stupid! he gos to besiktas on loan gets a goal on his debut??? he will become a good player, just look at nani he has been at united since 2007 and has only just cum good??

  5. @chesterinoaussie so what danny welbeck went out on loan last season so did cleverly, if he ca show himself out on loan thers still a spot for him in uniteds team he is only 20 and lets be honest united only have 2 good wingers now and thats not enough.

  6. @realtalk293 August last year he had a cruciate ligament tear and has an option with Besiktas to move permanently for 2m, since his loan move he's not played a single game according to the statistics i have read.

He's nearly 22 now and the only thing he has gained during his move is a serious injury. He's only wracked up 339 minutes of game time since August 2010, i'm not even a Man U fan and looking at that i'd say it was a bad deal for 7.4m.

  7. whats funny is that everybody is talking about him negatively as if untied brought this guy for first team football. he was brought for development purposes in the reserves. but the fact that people are talking about him, like as if he is a first team star who's preforming badly means that people have high expectations for him which shows he must have something special about him….

  8. for his price tag?? well as far as clubs are concerned, how much a player costs is none of your business. So if you were expecting a ronaldo then that's your problem not Bebe's or the managers. Dickheads like you act like the club came out publicly and said "hey everybody this is our new big major signing"! like what they did with van persie when they brought him the club. Yea he is so shit that he plays for one of the best clubs in the world and scored on he's debut.. learn how to play ball son

  9. ok if bebe wass bought for a world record price of 100 million u wouldnt be saying anything that u just said because u would have expected more out of him than what youve seen. in a similiar way, 7 million is a lot of money and to pay that much money for a youngster im not saying u would expect another ronaldo, but SOME footballing talent at the least. But i havent seen anything to suggest this guy is even a professional football player. watch a video on his performance against wolves please.

  10. Only reason we bought him was because of fergies previous assistant Carlos Queiroz who so highly recommended him. If fergie had watched him play u think he would of paid that kind of money for him helll no. stupid shit know what ur talking about

  11. Yes but he's been playing for the reserves and he's been shit there too. If you seriously think this guy has any talent you need your head checked. Easily one of the worst players ever to pull on the red of United.

  12. Horrible player, first time I saw him play he was aldy meant to be a flop! When you look at Mata, Scholes, Rooney and Januzaj etc play they are great and skilled! Bebe is not and shitful! From a Barca fan. Wasted United 7.4 M

  13. He's not as bad as you say. He does have good potencial but not as winger. He is a Striker!!
Imagine Ibrahimovic or Benzema becoming wingers and figure how much they would suck.
