Man United needs to get rid of Onana. He’s a deadwood. If a shot doesn’t hit him directly he doesn’t save it. Every time he dives to save a low shot, Onana dives in a slow motion. This guy costed us three champions league games from winning position. I will never forgive him for those champions league games. He costed directly 9 points.
Great keeper but came in at the wrong time imo, should have been brought in around this summer so there would be more time to rebuild that backline

Guessing this only makes sense with technically secure teammates. Too risky with Harry, Scott and the likes
This would work if we would play with a high line defence but we don't have such defenders except for licha and dalot maybe.
United should sign todibo and branthwaite and play licha with todibo and branthwaite with kambwala.
I think with these defence pairings, this tactic would work.
I appreciate that you say MU and ETH should be able to set up and play out from defence in a more up to date and effective way, but I am more cautious about whether it is actually feasible with the available players (given injury has removed the most press resistant and ball progressing defenders). As I don't accept that ETH is a rubbish coach (last season is evidence alone that he is up to the job in England), I accept that like Ollie and Rangnick he has looked at trying to play a higher line and play out from the back with the available players and realised it can't be done. There is a consistent line in these issues that belies the argument that it can be done with the available players.
It also explains why ETH was so keen to get defenders in during all of his transfer windows. He knows the limitations the current squad has. That this couldn't be done reflects the poison pill of huge wages for many players, especially under FFP.
I have little doubt that ETH will look to use Onana in much the way you argue for – that's why he was brought in. Onana has looked increasingly good this season and I think we will see benefits next season with some different personnel, if they can be brought in.
We need better players around onana
Let's not forget that this keeper and coach were playing the exact way we want in Ajax.

Looks like a great idea on paper at least, but Ten Hag didn't get the momentum at the start of this season, to be able to take that risk, and chose to be pragmatic as he himself called it.
Without Shaw and Martinez United's build up doesn't exist. Onana simply has nobody to pass the ball to. All other defenders are terrible on the ball

This is what Ten Hag wants to do, but you cannot do this with Evans, Maguire, Varane, Casemiro. We need defenders who are more comfortable on the ball.

I think ten haag doesn't trust varane if he can get a ball playing right center back he can do it

I think this is why EtH so desperately wanted a ball-playing CB in the last summer: Kim Min Jae, Pavard, Todibo, etc. Martinez needs a partner that is just as comfortable playing the ball as he is, and then we'll see the best out of Onana's ball playing
