Your points about Maloney make me go back to something I've thought for a while. If he's smart, he should stake a claim as a depth CB. He has the size and the defensive talents. He could get away with having less technical ability at CB versus defensive midfield, and we don't have a wealth of options for a 3rd or 4th CB. He'd probably be competing against guys like Miles Robinson/Auston Trusty/Mark McKenzie for the 4th CB spot today. Once Ream ages out, which realistically could happen before 2026 (2 years is a long time for a 36 year old player), it would be a competition for even higher up on the depth chart.
I actually like the fact that we have a team with depth, maybe not the best players but we have depth
Cardozo is not the better player I need 2 good years
I need 2 good years in Betis or a Europe team and then maybe Cardozo is better we need to see more of him
Should Gio and Tyler be called up if healthy? Yes! Should they start over Cardozo and Tillman? No! Cardozo and Tillman are performing and starting, Gio and Tyler are not, for the National team you have to go with the players that are hot right now
Great series. I’m just glad we’ve reached the point where the debate is more refined- has moved up a a level above the perennials Long, Arriola Accosta, Lletget. If only we had a pool of managers at the same level…
Surprised that Chris Richards didn't get at least mentioned at the "6" due to all his time spent there this season for Crystal. It looks like he has performed pretty damn well.
–> Lovin' the discussion.
–> If I'm picking a squad *right now*, then I've got to put Johnny Cardoso above Tyler Adams. We can't say "assuming Tyler plays same as with Leeds". That's too much to assume. We know that Johnny is ballin' at Real Betis. It'll take Tyler a while to get back up to speed. So, Johnny's got the edge *right now*.
–> I've seen Tillman play in the Scottish Premier League. Dude really didn't show up in the big matches. No way he starts over Gio *right now*. Maybe later at Copa – maybe – but certainly not in Nations League.
6:
Adams > Cardoso
Not by much though.
Prefer someone to destroy/ stop/ defend at the 6 position.
Thanks! Will you make a video with Luke’s sports academy?
We are finally seeing some true depth within this team/player pool. In previous cycles/generations there was a LOT of worry whenever we were down or lost a starter to injury/cards (Claudio, O'Brian, Jones, Bradley,), as we just didn't have the talent to replace them. I have less concern in this generation than ever before (At least in the Midfield & CF positions). And while we're discussing this depth we also have to remember that many of these players are only just now entering their prime/formidable playing years…..
Adams (25) as the starter, Johnny (22) as back-up. 3rd string is probably Musah for now (looking for someone from Olympics to emerge).
But the gap between Tyler & Johnny is shrinking. In near future I could see it come down to who the opponent is as to who starts.
McKennie (25) as the starter, Musah (21) as back-up. Luca DLT (25) as 3rd string. Watching for a Olympics guy to emerge to push Luca.
I expect Musah to make a surge next year at AC Milan…where he could close the gap on Weston and challenge for the starting spot. But right now Musah just isn't a threat to score while Weston is.
Gio (21) as the starter, Malik Tillmann (21) as the back-up. 3rd string Taylor Booth (22) or Zendejas (26).
Gio is more talented, but Tillmann is getting more game time. Both are trying to find there footing and find consistency…it could be a race to see who finds it first. Not real thrilled with the 3rd string at this moment, but I give the edge to Booth (not that he's likely to challenge for a starting spot.

After the Olympics I think we could see some fresh names move towards a point where they can challenge for the 3rd spot in the depth chart, but none of them are consistent enough at this point in time to list. But there are some talents in the next wave, just need a bit more seasoning/experience.
LDLT as #2 8, and #3 10. He has added a variety of through balls and shooting since moving to Spain. Weston has become solid around the box, but better creating from wide, or distributing wide. Musah can tackle and dribble forward. That's a 6 or fullback.
Would love to see a similar video with top 4 players in each position with no repeats. Maybe some names that many of us don’t know would make the list. Thanks for the great videos!
All I gotta say is "yes papa"
When does the usmt roster release for the nations league ?
Goo Reyna needs betterhelp
Last year would have been a better time to compare. Adams hasn’t played at all, and Reyna is limited. I’d still go Reyna over Tillman. He’s better on the ball by far. As it stands now, Adams is still another 30-60 days out. He doesn’t have match fitness to even argue this, as a result it goes to Cardoso over Tyler. 2022-23 it’s Adams. Again, it’s impossible to compare the two
If Johnny continues his current trajectory, he could honestly be one of the most important players in our squad moving forward; no other player has his skill set. Tyler Adam’s is still extremely valuable, but I would consider him to be a situational player, instead of an every game starter.
man, we went from desperately trying to find a back up for Tyler Adams to Tyler becoming the back up. Crazy times..
The more I watch Jhonny I am impressed. I think he is a better 6 than Adams. Defensively he is steady, his ball handling and distribution is a lot better than Adams.
I'm glad we are finally having these discussions. Who's playing better as opposed to who doesn't suck as much. This USMNT is much stronger and has more experience than the team that they took to the last WC by far.
I’d rather see Johnny as a 10 than Weston
Kellyn Acosta actually plays better as an 8 where he can run more and cover more ground, and where he can shoot more.
johnny has been class every game for real betis . johnny is better simple
This series is making me feel less confident about the USMNT. Midfield is the only strong area. Defenders and attackers are terrible.
I dont think Tillman is better but he definitely deserves his shot. Gio is simply not playing well right now and Tillman has stepped up. He deserves to get his shot as a starter
On Johnny/Tyler… It comes down to two things. A. Can Johnny sustain this form, and continue to show growth through the remainder of the season and beyond? B. What does Tyler look like on his return?
We've seen so little of Tyler in the last year. It was a huge worry when the first injury hit. Johnny showing out at a higher level is timely.
I think DLT above Musah currently. Musah is getting so few minutes, and Luca is showing a lot of growth. I see this as temporary though. I think Musah, at some point in the next 2 years, will start to elevate his game toward what we all know his potential is.
The Gio bias is real. Tell me one elite national team that would even call up a 21 year old who hasnt played a full 90 in two years and cant get any playing time at club level. I'll wait.
Yes and yes, Johnny and Malik > Adams and Gio. Certainly right now. It can always change.
If we are facing Argentina tomorrow… I go Tyler and Johnny double pivot Gio at the 10 and Wes at RM and Pulisic at LM.
