Australia defender Milos Degenek described the Socceroos’ progression to the knockout phase at Qatar 2022 as an “historic achievement” on Thursday, as he reflected on the 1-0 win over Denmark that secured the runners-up spot in Group D and a place in the last 16 for only the second time in the nation’s history.

“To keep two clean sheets at the World Cup is something phenomenal,” the Columbus Crew centre back said. “To get out of a group like this with six points… no one believed in us apart from us and the people around us.”

Degenek added that Australia don’t want to stop there, but want to keep going – reaching the quarter-finals would be their best-ever performance at a World Cup.

Their opponents in the last 16 are Argentina and Degenek said he regarded Lionel Messi as the “greatest to ever play the game”, but he is adamant that Australia can be competitive against them.

“It’s going to be a difficult game, but there are not 11 Messis (in the Argentina team). There is one.”
