Jonny Williams continues his Top Ten countdown of favourite WilliamsF1 races. Race Seven again reflects his personal contribution to Williams history, for it resulted in both an F1 and F3000 win over the same weekend – the 2001 German GP meeting at Hockenheim. Although the GP was eventually won by Ralf Schumacher, it was the driving of Juan-Pablo Montoya that Jonny celebrates in this video – right down to Connie Montoya insisting that the same group eat at the same restaurant throughout the weekend. As he was with Jacques Villeneuve, Jonny Williams was instrumental in bringing the brilliant Colombian driver to Williams and thus to F1.

I wonder if everything would have been different for the team if Jonny had been in charge instead of Claire: she’s comes across as being well out of her depth and rather incompetent.
Williams would win the 2003 championship with Montoya but he didn’t support
Woo, heat with Ralf… bet Jac isn't going to be in this series
Seems like no love lost between williams and ralf. Montoya on the other hand is well liked at the team. I remember on the f1 year in review 2001, ralf talking a lot of crap about montoya not having mechanical simpathy, and monty answering that those engines were imposible to abuse because of the safety mecanisms they have. They were fool proof. I never liked ralf and considered montoya a better driver. I imagine ralf needed the car to be well planted at the rear to be fast, while montoya could adapt his driving style to the needs of the car.
Montoya was such a great driver to watch and like Hakkinen and Alonso could take on Michael Schumacher seemingly without intimidation
JPM was definitely Frank's kind of driver. I think he put Ralf's nose out of joint coming in and making the team his. Ralf for me could drive a good car to its limits but couldn't drive around a problem. Monster could plus he was a real racer. He and Kimi really took it to Michael in '02 & '03. Pity Ferrari International Assistance threw '03 Michael's way with the tyre width farce.
Great series 🙂 This Williams have great knowledge 🙂
I miss those days, Pure F1 , loud and fast … Sad what it has become today….. due to Hybrid BS…. Sometime too much technology is not good, still need the human side
JPM had so much bad luck during his F1 Career. Williams big problem during his time there was reliability as so many races were thrown away with engine or other mechanical problems. He could well have won the 2003 F1 crown with better luck and then of course the scandalous stewards where he was given a penalty at Indianapolis.
Ralf was OK (especially for a Michael for a coat tail rider, which must have been tough) but he doesn't exist in the same universe as JPM even though he has just 1 less F1 win. Look at everything else JPM has done. Montoya brutalized CART when he got there, as he did the series he was in before that. He should have had 2 F1 titles. Williams did so well for such a comparatively small team. The FIA and Ferrari just Mafia'd Williams/BMW with that Michelin tire bullshit, truly criminal.
Watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZQZ6MjtGPQ where they're driving whole laps at speeds F1 can only dream about as a top speed.
JPM was Williams last truly great driver, and sadly Williams last hope of a world championship. Either way probably the fastest driver ever over a single lap.
Wow.. I guess no much love towards Ralf… Anyways its nice to hear someone like Jonny Williams talk about Montoya like that… He was a bit underrated back them but with a few memorable moves (like the one on Michael Sch. in Brazil)… People still remember. Very nice.
Re Ralf Schumacher (often unkindly termed 'Half') in a perfect day and a perfect car, he seemed very capable of Grand Prix wins; he did win 6 after all. But when that perfect storm wasn't there he came across quite average (for an established top line F1 driver), and out of the car just seemed like a sulky, petulant toad. Not someone you'd want a beer with………. Michael was ruthless but also seemed fun and had charisma and personality out of the car, Ralf really was 'half' in so many ways. Montoya was a far better driver than his tally records, and a far better driver than Ralf!
"Ralf's problem is that he thinks he's Michael." a quote from Martin Brundle, which I think just about sums it up.
Absolutely brutal. "We can get through the rest of this without mentioning Ralf Schumacher again"! 😂
What's the beef with Ralf, I get he retired a healthy car China '04 but he won 6 races for the team?
Peter Windsor, could be better Jonny williams as a team principal of Williams F1 than his sister Claire?
Why Frank and (maybe) Ginny chosem Claire to be deputy team principal?
