According to a report by The Associated Press, Alvarado, a Costa Rican who was voted the top goalkeeper in the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup, sensed a rush by a fan who ran out of the stands in an apparent attempt to attack or harass the AZ player.
Alvarado, 22, showed his goalkeeping reflexes by tripping the man, then kicking him several times with his favorite right foot. Referee Bas Nijhuis then pulled out a red card and banished Alvarado. AZ Coach Gertjan Verbeek then directed his team, which was trailing by 1-0 in the 36th minute, to leave the field.

This is complete out rages bullshit; Esteban Alvarado gets attacked, by a drunken fan; then turns around and gets a Red card: I'm glad AZ Alkmaar walk off. A sad day for football, a fan decides the outcome of the game; and not only that potentially the outcome of the tournament. Complete bullshit!
