Southampton ready to make £10m move for Joakim Maehle as Hasenhuttl eyes replacement for Cedric. Southampton are ready to offer £10million for Genk right-back Joakim Maehle.

The Denmark U21 international is wanted to replace Cedric Soares after the Portuguese left to join Inter Milan on loan.

Having taken over from Mark Hughes at the start of December, Ralph Hasenhuttl is keen to reshape his squad and wants Maehle to bolster his options in defence.

Hasenhuttl has already shown a willingness to allow exits this month as Cedric joined Manolo Gabbiadini, Steven Davis and Wesley Hoedt in leaving St Mary’s.

Genk are currently top of the Jupiler League in Belgium and Danish defender Maehle has played a key role in their impressive campaign.

Nineteen-year-old Yan Valery has been given the chance to impress this season at right back but Hasenhuttl is keen to provide cover, easing the pressure on the young star as he finds his feet.

Maehle, who can also play in midfield, cost Genk £1.3m from Aalborg in 2017 and his versatility is another reason he has been earmarked by the south coast club.

Southampton are currently 15th in the table and sit just three points clear of the relegation zone.

Hasenhuttl’s side host Crystal Palace at St Mary’s on Wednesday which leaves just 24 hours after full-time to get any remaining deals over the line.
