Qatar defeated Iran 3-1 in the semi-final of the Asian Cup, securing their place in the final of the tournament. Sardar Azmoun gave Iran the lead with an acrobatic overhead kick, but Qatar quickly equalized through Jassem Gaber’s deflected shot. Akram Afif then put Qatar ahead with a solo goal, taking his tally to five for the tournament. Iran were awarded a controversial penalty, which was initially waved away but then given after a VAR review. Alireza Jahanbakhsh converted the penalty to level the scores. However, Almoez Ali scored the winning goal for Qatar in the 82nd minute, and Iran’s Shoja Khalilzadeh was sent off late in the game. Qatar will face Jordan in the final, as Jordan defeated South Korea to reach their first-ever Asian Cup final. Qatar is aiming to become the first team since Japan in 2000 and 2004 to win back-to-back Asian Cup titles.
