Sydney striker Patrick Wood has been mocked for producing one of the worst misses in football history after firing an open-goal chance wide from close range.

Sydney, 3-0 up, opening half hour, Central Coast Mariners, Saturday, striker Wood, glorious opportunity, point-blank range, 21-year-old, goalkeeper Danny Vukovic, poor touch, missed tap-in, seemed easier to score.

The 21-year-old started upfront for Sydney in their A-League clash against Central Coast Mariners on Saturday and was left with his head in his hands after the calamitous error.

Sydney were already 3-0 up within the first half-hour of the match when Wood had a golden chance to give the visitors a four-goal cushion in New South Wales, Australia.

A back-pass to Central Coast goalkeeper Danny Vukovic was spilled into Wood’s path via a poor touch that gave the Sydney striker a huge chance to score an easy tap-in.

Wood was just two yards from goal and facing into an open net as he took a first touch to set himself up for a finish that should have been tapped easily over the line.

However, he somehow pulled his effort wide of the post to the shock of everyone inside the stadium, including his teammates and opposition players.

The easier finish might have been to hit the ball the first time with his weaker left foot rather than take an extra touch and invite more pressure.

Wood immediately sank his head into his hands as realization set in before trudging back towards the halfway line as a goal-kick got playback underway.

Commentary of the goal on TNT Sports couldn’t believe what had just happened, describing Wood’s shocker by stating: ‘Oh and the miss, well anything can and does happen because that you will never see that again.

‘That is the most astonishing miss, he must be wishing the ground would just swallow him up.’

Social media reacted to the glaring miss with expected criticism as fans laughed at the error. One comment on X read: ‘Embarrassing that he doesn’t trust his left foot from two yards out.’

Another added: ‘Deserved miss, should have rolled it home with his left foot rather than running round the ball to use his right.’

Sydney went on to win the match 3-1 with Wood being substituted in the 61st minute.
