After a riveting pink ball Test match at the Gabba, where a certain guy called Shamar Joseph from Guyana ripped apart World Test Champions Australia, bowling one of the most inspirational spells in the history of the game with a broken toe, hosts Australia are all set to lock horns with West Indies in the first match of the three-match ODI series at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday (February 2).
World Champions Australia take the field for the first time in ODIs since that crowd-silencing triumph over the hosts and the favourites, India, at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, in the 2023 World Cup Final (November 19). In contrast, the two-time World Champions, West Indies, who failed to qualify for the same mega event, are in their rebuilding phase, preparing for the next World Cup, which is closely four years away.
The Aussies managed to dominate the home summer, winning four of their five Tests, with the previous one in Brisbane being their first defeat in the day-night Test matches. While the Windies won a three-match ODI series against England by a 2-1 margin last December at home. It was a historic victory for Shai Hope and his men as they defeated the English in an ODI series for the first time in 25 years.
Talking about the squad, Australia have rested their big three quicks, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood, who had a lot of hard work to do during the two different Test series’ against visiting Pakistan and West Indies. While David Warner has retired from the format, Mitchell Marsh has been rested for the series. In Cummins’ absence, Steven Smith will lead the home side, with Travis Head, the vice-captain, Josh Inglis, Marnus Labuschagne, Cameron Green and Adam Zampa being the other experienced players. The likes of Marcus Stoinis and Alex Carey haven’t been considered in the plans, while Glenn Maxwell and Jhye Richardson, who were initially named in the set-up, have been ruled out of the series due to respective injuries. Big Bash League (BBL) 2023-24 sensations Jake Fraser-McGurk and Xavier Bartlett have been named as Maxwell’s and Richardson’s replacements, respectively. Furthermore, they have also made a late addition of handing Victorian Will Sutherland his maiden national call-up after Nathan Ellis failed to gain 100% fitness post-injury. Lance Morris might make his debut in the format, while rising stars Matt Short and Aaron Hardie will try to continue their good BBL form in the international circuit. Sean Abbott is the other pace option, while Josh Inglis will don the gloves.
