Veteran coach Carlos Queiroz RETURNS to Iran ahead of 2022 World Cup.
Portuguese football coach Carlos Queiroz was in Tehran on Wednesday for his first training session with the Iranian national team since he was appointed as manager. The former Real Madrid coach returns to the team for a third time, having previously been in charge in 2014 and 2018.
Iran appeared in the FIFA World Cup in both of those years. “We’ve just started this mini-camp today. It was beautiful to start again here in Iran. I’m very much happy to have the opportunity again to work with our national team players,” the veteran coach said. 69-year-old Queiroz succeeds Dragan Skocic, who was fired and rehired in July, hinting at possible turmoil within the club’s management.
Queiroz was appointed last week after a pledge made by Mehdi Taj, newly-elected president of the Iranian Football Federation. Iran will appear in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in November. They begin the tournament in Group B, alongside England, Wales and the United States.
