Fernando Santos was the first manager to qualify Serbia directly to the World Cup.
It’s clear Portugal need a younger more progressive coach. Santos has done as much as he can which right now is not enough for Portugal. He’s won two major trophies which is better than any other Portugal manager so he also deserves respect too. If Portugal don’t make Qatar 2022 he should be sacked if they do make it I’d say keep him for the World Cup then get a new manager in afterwards.
For me Santos is not a bad coach. As you mentioned he is conservative, defensive and too negative approach. He won Euro with this style and he must take the credit. BUT he is outdated, his style was cracked long time a go. He survived all this time by players individual brilliance. Another thing that he is doing bad is to please Mendes.
The guy is literally worst than Mourinho imo.. even in 2016 Portugal draw all group stage games and throughout the tournament they only beat wales within the 90min.. get him out

The fact that, as a Canadian of Portuguese descent, it's looking like I'm likelier to be able to cheer the Canadian team and not the Portuguese team is… so very fucking weird. Frankly unacceptable considering how many talented players are on that Portugal squad.
In a sense, he reminds me of Domenech. Domenech was not a good manager for France, as Euro 2008 and the World Cup 2010 disasters showed. He should have been sacked after the Euro, but because of his 2006 World Cup run, he got an extra shot.

Fernando Santos is ruining our golden generation, its sad, really sad, he is not qualified to manage this team, thats why we lost to Germany, Belgium and Serbia, he needs to be fired NOW!
Anyone with eyes can see that Portugal were unbelievably lucky to win Euro 2016. We played terribly in the group stage, somehow made it to third place, and SOMEHOW that third place put Portugal on the easy path to the final rather than Iceland's hard path as second placed team. Then on the final, by all rights France should have crushed us 4-0, but the posts and divine intervention (Saint Eder) somehow gave us a win. Great.
Then in 2018, Portugal KNOWS that they just have to beat Iran to pass in first place, and we can't even manage that. We get Uruguay (who won their group) and lose. "Though draw", says Santos, conveniently ignoring that had he won his group, he could've had that desired easy draw.
Euro 2020 (in 2021), Portugal fail to win a qualification group where the top opponent was mighty Ukraine (no disrespect, but come on), and then deservingly gets smacked in the face with the toughest group they could get. No match for Germany, and they were lucky France was too respectful, they could've beaten us too.
There is nothing wrong with being defensive, the problem is when, like Portugal, you are defensive but still defend TERRIBLY. Portugal concedes chance after chance against every opponent on every match. Greece in 2004 was truly rock solid and near-impossible to break apart, Portugal even in their winning 2016 campaign was shockingly vulnerable at the back.
Fernando Santos has no idea what he's doing or how he got here, and needs to go NOW (obviously he won't, and will blame the "tough draw" after Turkey or Italy kick us out of WC 2022).

If we make it through the first game and we play Italy. We better not play Carvalho, Paulinho & Danilo. Renato Sanches should be our only CM. 4-2-3-1 would be my dream, LB- Mendes or Guerreiro, CB- Dias & Pepe, RB- Cancelo (if available cause I’m pretty sure he only misses the game against Turkey). CM- Sanches & Fernandes. LW- Jota, CF- Felix, RW- Silva. And lone striker obviously Ronaldo. That’s my dream lineup for a 4-2-3-1

Adrian, there's a bit of naivety to your analysis. Yes, FS's tactics are wasteful but the problem is called J-O-R-G-E M-E-N-D-E-S and, controversially, Cristiano. I think the best football Portugal played was in the opening matches of the Nations league (v Italy & Poland). Fast, furious, creative, attacking football. When Ronaldo came back….it all became about getting him the ball. To be fair, he is a match-winner but, until we break the addiction…..we're doomed to this brand of football. Rui Jorge would be a disaster.
Look at FS's days in charge of Porto, with Jardel. Everything went through Jardel, much like it does through Ronaldo. Once Jardel was sold, FS couldn't adapt.

I wont lie as a Portuguese that have been seeing the young Portuguese since sub-17 IS a waste of huge talent. The '99 generation since sub-17 have been destroying both euro and world cups being one of the best generations right now winning euro sub-17, sub-19 and losing at the euro final sub-21 (robbed but ok).
As a Portuguese i am more than grateful for what Fernando Santos did in this 8 years (he started once the world cup ended) of commanding a team that never knew what actually winning a major thing was. The best generation by far is the early 2000's where had huge players in every position but the best that got was losing in a final in euro 2004 in our own country.
Portugal is a very a small country but still, nowadays is reaching a level of getting a lot potential players everyday and because of he is still there, they wont reach their potential in the national team or because they wont play what they are used to or will keep struggle to do something basic or will allways depend on cr7 (even though Portugal won Italy in the first national leagues against Italy and then draw without him) or some other major player once he retire (i hope he keeps playing in his 40's).
Because of him we got used to win easily 6-0 against a small national and if wasnt that, was at least 4-0. But when is an nation with the same type of level or struggle or they would some stupid mistake like the 2 own goals in euro 2020 in the same match.
I wont lie i love that man with my whole heart and allways will, but its time, its time for a new chapter, hope the best and hope that the new manager makes them actually play what they usual do in their clubs (or even better) or we will struggle as allways and i really think that we wont be in world cup.

Is the regulation time really important? When you’re looking at an entire game? I disagree. A full match doesn’t mean 90 minutes.
