Rio Ferdinand is a Premier league Great,JTerry played a deep defensive along side the likes of Carvalho etc,defending the half-way line is much harder than filling ye own 18yd box with players,tactics have changed teams play with a high line these days,Rio would cope but I'm not sure the likes of Carra and Terry would

Best defender when he was at Southampton, completely transformed Liverpool, won everything, misses 1 season due to injury and 1 off season where everyone was shite . So he has had one bad season in 7-8

Wait, why is it that he's only had 2-3 good seasons, but Ronaldo gets in the all-time premier league eleven with 3 good seasons? We're talking about weaknesses. Are you gonna beat a prime Van Dijk 1v1? No, in a race? No, in the air? No, is he a ariel threat? Yes, can he play out from the back? He's one of the most complete modern day centre backs ever with no weaknesses.
centre defenders like VVD have little or no protection a lot of times unlike defenders like Rio and JT, tony Adam etc playing in rigid formations with proper defensive midfielder on front of them and full backs that are normally in defensive positions. VVD the best traits of any of them centre half’s in question. Also count on one hand how many times VVD beaten in a 1v1.

Always difficult to compare different generations, but Terry and Rio played in the same England team and we didn't win anything. Not solely down to them, but the defence is clearly an essential component
