Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana traveled 5,000 miles in less than 24 hours to make Cameroon’s opening Africa Cup of Nations match, only to be left out of the squad. Onana had hoped to start against Guinea on Monday but was ultimately left out of the squad by Cameroon coach Rigobert Song. The goalkeeper expressed his frustration to former Liverpool player El Hadji Diouf, asking why he had come on a private jet if he wasn’t going to play. Onana had boarded a private jet immediately after United’s Premier League draw with Tottenham to join the Cameroon squad but endured a nightmare journey due to fog and bad weather. The decision to omit Onana from the squad did not come as a surprise to many, given the arduous journey he had just gone through. Onana has had a difficult relationship with Song and the Cameroonian Football Federation president Samuel Eto’o, and these latest developments could present fresh challenges. It remains to be seen if Onana will start in Cameroon’s second Group C match against Senegal.
