It was a weekend of very mixed emotions: there was the fire in the Williams garage; and, as it turned out, this would effectively be the last race ever to be attended by Lady Virginia Williams. And then there was Pastor Maldonado’s sensational win over Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso – the last, to date, for the Williams F1 team. With his customary attention to detail and feel for F1 historical perspective, Jonny Williams, Sir Frank’s eldest son, brilliantly recaptures the essence of the 2012 Spanish GP at Barcelona and the significance over time of the Williams FW34-Renault. This is race number six in his countdown to his Ten Favourite WilliamsF1 Grands Prix.

  1. I remember when Senna won in Australia in 1993. They beat Ferrari for the most wins in F1 history. Sad to think it was his last. Joe R said to Senna on the race start “If you win this one, I will love you forever”. Still brings a tear to my eye.

  2. Excuse my ignorance but what does Jonny do now days?… Claire run the team… but Jonny seams like well grounded guy (knowledgeable) wouldn’t he help greatly running the family business?
    Maybe he does, I don’t know…

  3. Grrat stuff once again. A magical weekend. Frank's 70th birthday celebration, Ginny with him, in Spain where Frank started in F1 with Piers, Pastor on top form against Fernando in all his pomp. Merc & Lewis gave Frank a great birthday gift! In my living room, I couldn't sit down throughout the race. I was too excited (at 46 years old!). Then, as Claire said, "We set fire to the garage!". Such great British irony! Thanks so much Jonny & Peter.
