Gervonta Davis CONFIRMED Devin Haney VS Ryan Garcia And CANCELLED Isaac Cruz
We have division No. 1 Teofimo Lopez, who is the owner of the WBO and Ring Magazine championships. Gervonta “Tank” Davis has moonlighted at 140 pounds in between lightweight assignments. And then there’s Haney’s old amateur rival Ryan Garcia, who brings plenty of box office to the table.
Not so fast. While Lopez returns to action against Jamaine Ortiz on February 8, the Brooklyn-born star has been very inactive and unpredictable in recent years. There’s also a lot of bad blood between the camps, and potential negotiations for Lopez-Haney could become the subject of a Netflix documentary.
“Tank” Davis is one of the best fighters in the game, but according to promoter Eddie Hearn, he baulked at a huge money offer to face Haney. Leonard Ellerbe, who represents Davis, then took to social media and insisted that Hearn would have no active part in a Davis-Haney matchup. My, that’s encouraging.
And then there’s the curious case of Ryan Garcia. Following Haney’s win over Prograis on December 9, “KingRy” activated call-out mode. “Haney and I will fight in 2024,” stated the young Californian on Twitter (X). “You can hold me to it unless it’s not in God’s will.”
Well, by January 6, not long after Garcia was spotted on a late-night jog with Hall of Famer Floyd Mayweather on the Vegas Strip, it became clear that the man upstairs had other plans. “I’ve notified my team I’m going a different route,” said Garcia on social media. “My intent now is to fight (WBA champion) Rolando Romero. I pray my team backs me on this decision. Oscar, make this fight happen. THAT’S THE MOVE. BIGGER FIGHT, BIGGER BUSINESS. #GarciaRomero.”
Devin Haney never looked better than he did against Regis Prograis in December.
His 140-pound debut was almost flawless, as he dominated a quality opponent, picked up the WBC title and marched further up the pound-for-pound ratings. The sky should no longer be the limit for Haney, who announced himself in a new division replete with elite-level talent.
A huge fight stateside does not seem to be happening in 2024.
Matchroom’s Eddie Hearn is frustrated with how negotiations for a potential fight between WBC super lightweight Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia have fallen apart.
Over recent weeks, Garcia has been showing his interest in facing Haney in what would be a huge matchup between two of America’s biggest stars and with both camps trying to work out a deal, there was a real possibility this fight would materialise.
However, Garcia has since changed his mind and now wants to face WBA 140lb champion Rolando Romero for what would be his first shot at a world title.
Speaking to Matchroom Boxing’s YouTube channel, Hearn gave his reaction to the collapse in negotiations for the Haney vs. Garcia fight, and while he was frustrated, there is an understanding as to why Garcia decided to make an opponent change.
“He [Ryan Garcia] DM’d me a few times saying ‘Just want to confirm, this is the fight I want, Devin Haney.’ ” Hearn said.
“Oscar was onto me, had numerous conversations with Eric Gomez, we were working with DAZN to put an offer together for that fight. There’s been rumblings of that fight potentially being in the Middle East as well.
“Then he just tweeted ‘I change my mind, I’m fighting Rolly Romero.’ I get it.
“I mistakenly believed that Ryan Garcia was a legacy guy, he was a guy who wanted to fight the top guys for the championship, but I can’t blame him for what he’s doing.” Devin Haney has always been respectful of the fighters who came before him. In a recent example of such a gesture, he named a fighter whom he considers to have been underrated in his time.
Right now, Devin Haney stands at a crossroads. After his potential fights against Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia fell through his promoter, Eddie Hearn revealed that Sandor Martin might be a plausible name that Haney could go ahead with. However, ‘the Dream’ who snatched Regis Prograis’ WBC Super lightweight belt last year is still out looking for opponents. While he remains poised as one of the most abled fighters of his generation, he wrote an ode to another fighter, a legend in his own right.
