Another good response from Oxford United today in Sky Bet league One. After the crushing defeat to Derby County Oxford travelled to Charlton Athletic for the first game of 2024 and came back to win. It finished Charlton Athletic 1-2 Oxford United. Please enjoy my review of this EFL League One game.

Oxford United win on New Years day and it was a thunderbolt striker from Osin Smyth that won the game 5 minutes from the end. It was his first OUFC goal and it was 1 to remember from about 35 yards. The Addicks took the lead after 5 minutes with Chem Campbell scoring from close range, but Oxford responded well and MARK HARRIS finally broke his scoring drought and levelled the game. Both Charlton and Oxford looked like sides out of form and it needed something special to separate the side. And, it was Smyth’s strike which sent the Oxford fans away from The Valley happy. Des Buckingham & Michael Appleton were both under pressure, but it’s Buckingham who will go home with the points and Appleton suffered the Ire of the Charlton faithful.

  1. Good win nice to see Billy back. Special mention for Joe Bennett has really hit the groove we know his quality and he deserves his starting place
Give him a full time contract he deserves it.

  2. Big relief after the Derby roasting! It's reassuring that we can eke out a win like this whilst not playing brilliantly, and with so many injuries. For most of the game the two teams looked like mirror images, playing in fits and starts with little in the way of pace or continuity. I was just texting someone to say that a 1-1 draw was a fair result when Smyth produced that cracker! Thought he played better in that right side of the back three role than he has done when in midfield, and he deserved the celebrations afterwards.

  3. Just as a side note. Beadle signed a contract extension with Brighton today. Probably means he’s. It going to be sold to Blackburn Rovers now. Unless they want to loan him

  4. Cock-a-hoop! What a lovely way to start the year. We're still in it and although it didn't have the cut n thrust of the Derby game it was lovely to get another 3 points under the belt. If we can hold onto our loan players, etc. The world awaits us

  5. Thank you again Ian a very good assessment as usual. Umm well i want to start with how pleased i was to see mark Harris score, 5 minutes before he scored there was an opportunity for the same ball to be put into him in exactly the same position. If it was played into him then he would have had the exact same opportunity as he did for his goal. I think when strikers dont recieve these balls then there confidence hits a low because they must think why are you not passing or trusting me. Anyway it took a great block to stop i think Brannaghan from scoring on that occasion. And you could see the relief on Harris face after he scored he had a new lease of life , taking shots from any opportunity that was always on target. Lets hope the team gives him more opportunities in the coming game's . So i want to also praise Buckingham for the three at the back system which has served us well the beginning of the season under Manning, oisin Smyth played extremely well and his range of passing we're brilliant most of the time. I think that we may have found his position, and our system again, every player played very well, i don't like players arguing between themselves but from those moments we looked absolutely solid, our passion and passing and pride was back. We played at our best i thought, we need to kick on now, harris has broken his draught, the defending was fantastic, our midfield chased everyone and everything, they passed the ball around productively, rarely misplace passes infact if you look at when we lost possession it was when players were outnumbered when they recieved the ball, some under cooked passes, but on whole we did extremely well and dez has to stick to the wing backs and three central defenders. Three become five, and now to the smyth goal, i had turned around at the time and missed it while watching the game on ifollow, i could just hear Rosie screaming i turned back and see Smyth celebrating with cam getting him in a head lock lol, i thought he was gou to rip his head off lol, then i saw the replay of the goal and omg what a hit no keeper was saving that. My assessment very much the same as your's, congratulations to the whole side they played there hearts out , battled like gladiator's, fought for everything, defended brilliantly and always had avenues to pass out to when they was defending, i hope cam, moore and brown got into the bar afterwards and put the arguments to bed and all understood where they was all coming from. Im sure they will they all only want oxford to win and get promoted never a doubt about that. Three central defenders is the way in most game's. Thank you Ian
