Manchester United’s poor succession planning in the years since Sir Alex Ferguson retired has been highlighted amid speculation over Erik ten Hag’s future at the club. United’s record in managerial appointments and support has been abject, with the fate of the previous eight appointments challenging Edward VIII as one of the greatest succession failures in British history. The only relatively smooth transition occurred in 2016 when Louis van Gaal made way for Jose Mourinho, but even that was not without controversy. United’s approach to identifying and appointing managerial talent has been haphazard, and it remains to be seen whether ten Hag will be replaced if results continue to stutter. Potential candidates to replace him include Graham Potter, Julen Lopetegui, Ruben Amorim, Zinedine Zidane, Roberto De Zerbi, and former United coaches Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna. However, it is suggested that a short-term boost for United is unlikely to come from any of these options. It is expected that ten Hag will remain in place until the summer, giving him five months to prove himself to the new owners, while they take the time to carefully assess the marketplace and make a measured decision on the next manager.
